OK, we're back! This outage WAS caused by an attack, but not the way it normally does.
We set up some firewall rules to try and minimize the effects of a light SYN flood against the web port and somehow we got locked out the box. It essentially became a black hole for packets and nothing could connect to it.
My provider rebooted the box this morning which reset the firewall rules to defaults and though the attack "rages" on, the box is now shrugging it off.
Sorry about the downtime... we won't make that mistake again.
