Sharp FPS drops [message #392098]

Like every 3 minutes my rengegade fps collapses to about 8-11. For no apparent reason at all, I cleaned out my computer and play with open casing just in case and it's not overheating (unless I'm missing something). My CPU usage seems fine too... and it's only renegade that I have this problem with. What could be wrong?
