Yes, but consider that Renegade was an entry into the most popular genre of computer action games, that being the First Person Shooter genre. It did have a number of issues from the start (though WW patched away most of them), and was not as graphically advanced as its contemporaries. Despite being quite a fun little game, Renegade just didn't deliver to the masses. Its primary appeal was to fans of the C&C series, and it did not draw many followers from outside that limited (but obsessively loyal) group. Ask around and see how many Ren players there are who never played another C&C game before picking up Ren...I doubt you'd find many.

Now, Renegade DID open up and reveal the potential of a first/third person perspective game based off an RTS- now we have games like World of Warcraft (MMORPG) and Starcraft Ghost (F/TPS) out and/or in the making. So all was not lost- publishers and developers DID see the potential of this type of game, and they ARE attempting to exploit it, with some great successes. It's a simple equation- RTS players love to see the world they command from the level of a single combatant. It makes the experience more personal, and a hell of a lot cooler.

Unfortunately, Renegade never reached that point. EA didn't give Westwood a second chance with Renegade...they really should have; I believe that if an expansion had been released, or a sequel with improved graphics and physics (and plot!), the idea really would have caught on. But, EA being a company that has really, really become really, really opposed to taking chances, they deep-sixed the whole operation instead, then went their own dumb way to milk out the franchise. Go figure.
