This is directed to those who believe in the religious version of 'hell'. For example, Christians or Muslims who suppose that non-adherents to their religion will suffer horrific punishment after they are dead.

Here is a hypothetical situation. You somehow learn this to be incorrect. You learn that atheists, who have chosen to reject your religion, DON'T go to hell. They just cease to exist in a conscious sense, the body decomposes, etc.

What would be your reaction? Is it a feeling of relief, or of disappointment?

I've heard that Hell is a place where everyone wears plaid bell-bottoms, and the Bay City Rollers play 24/7.

So I'd wager that anyone who heads to hell would be jealous of the atheist who just becomes worm food.

So you are asking IF it was true that atheists don't go to hell... what would my reaction be?
I'd be more concerned with what happens to those who aren't atheists.

For the sake of the thread, I'll extend the question to my beliefs, as I do believe in a hereafter, and whilst my beliefs are not so cut and shut as heaven and hell, you could draw a rough parallel I suppose.
I would feel disappointed that there was no hereafter, purely because I do not wish to cease being. Not because I have lived my life a certain way for no reward, because I am happy how I live my life.

  |

Define "god", please, in real terms.

I don't have a good answer to this question, so I'm responding with another question and hoping this topic derails.
