Well, it *is* accepted as either, but only when used a certain way. For example, if the pentacle has the star properly faced (pointing upward) then it shows the relationship of spirit being the highest purpose in life, while air\fire\water\earth are lower forms of existence.

When inverted, it shows that earth and fire are more important than spirit; that earthly things take precedence over matters of the soul. So we were both wrong, I just didn't bother explaining in depth.
