Who's got the accent?[ 28 votes ]
1. British 8 / 29%
2. Americans 1 / 4%
3. Australians 2 / 7%
4. British and Americans 1 / 4%
5. British and Australians 9 / 32%
6. Americans and Australians 7 / 25%

Who has the accent and why? In my opinion, the British got the accent. Whenever they sing, they sing like we talk. Also, we seem to pronounce words the way they are spelled. Not trying to be mean or nothing, but I want yalls opinion. Big Grin
PS: I love both of yalls accents. In Love

Where's the "everybody" option?

"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. Horrid mischief would ensue were (the law-abiding) deprived of the use of them." - Thomas Paine

Remember, kids: illiteracy is cool. If you took the time to read this, you are clearly a loser who will never get laid. You've been warned.

Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

I have no idea why but I think Australian accents are awesome. Australian girls are hotter by default with that accent (in my opinion of course). All other accents just annoy me but if you want me to pick out the most annoying accent in the universe it would be:

Brummie.

Looking at it from the viewpoint of who inherited whose language, the Americans and Australians have the accent, as we came up with English first.

That's right, it's you who can't pronounce it properly, not me! Razz

Well considering English is named after England, the country who invented the language, I would have to agree with CarrierII in that you are the ones with the accent since you use our language Razz

Everyone... Accent is usually taken from each person's point of view.

Plus, in my opinion Americans have 2 accents, south (redneck), and north(city folk).

I take it from that comment that you have never been to England then?
We don't just have dependant accents on North or South here, my accent can be completely different to someone who lives 2 miles away (especially being a northerner) Some common English accents are: Cockney (Londoners) Brummie (Folk from Birmingham) Geordie (people from Newcastle) Mancunian (us from Manchester) Scouse (Liverpool) and the reet nase accents from up int yorksheer or anywur norfer thant Lancasheer! (no my retarded pill didn't kick in then!)Phonetically speaking that last bit is roughly how the accent sounds And all of those places and accents are within like 250 miles of each other. Very diverse! Big Ups

Well I don't have an accent other than american. My dad is retired airforce. We moved every 2 1/2 years so i was never any place long enough to get one.

Their are far more accents in the united states then they 2 you mentioned. For example my relatives are Pennsylvania-Dutch. Its like an american german accent.

I would have to add a third to that...Midwestern or what Wikipedia calls "General American". I would consider myself and most of the country(area wise) speak with this accent because of the impact pop culture has on you while growing up. Most of the newscasters speak in this accent as well as a lot of actors, it seems accent less.

I have had the good fortune enough to have traveled in all the lower 48 states and talked to many people located throughout the English speaking world. In strictly the U.S. I would have to say the most foreign sounding accent would have to be Inland North, I go Wisconsin every so often to visit some of my step-mom's family and the way they pronounce "Don't you know!" with the long o's just sounds foreign(Canadian) to me.

For the rest of the world I would say the British and the Australians mostly because of the different vocabulary they have developed over the centuries we have been separated. "Oi Mate!"

Heh I always thought Barnsley accents were alright....having said that I love Northern English accents. Hate Southern Accents coz alot of my cousins are from Basildon and they talk like Cockneys and they like to refer to us (Northerners) as "a banch ov norven mankeys!" So I affectionatly call them a bunch of "shandy drinking southern tossers" oddly though we all get on really well when we are together for a family function!

If you call it "Pennsylvania-Dutch" then I would *think* it would be more like an American-Dutch accent Wink Yes Dutch it a different language then german.

More ontopic:
Technically British-English is the original form of english, since the USA-English originated out of a mix of British-English, Dutch, German, Itallian, and whatever other country had lot of people migrating to the USA. This is probably also the reason why you say it like to spell it, as that would be the most logical way to learn it.

Anyone who doesn't speak the same as you do has a French accent. Listen to a French person speaking English - they speak with an accent.

Regionally they're really diverse, like kytten(hello) said back there - the UK is probably one of the most diverse places accent-wise in the world.

I dunno about that. America has the hick accent, the normal sounding accent, the northerly accent, the hispanic trying to speak english accent, the asian trying to speak english accent, and then the way the african americans speak it. Big Grin
