renvis needs a new Name[ 46 votes ]

Hello there,

as mentioned before, renvis was a temporary working name. For some reasons, I have to change it until the next beta comes out.

There were a couple of good suggestions but I just couldnt decide which one I'd like best. So its your turn now Wink If you have other good suggestions, specify them in the post - but check with google before if they do not cause a trillion of hits already.

Just to keep you hooked; this is a new renvis function; it is possible to show all player positions during the whole game, yellow for GDI, red for Nod. Can you guess which team was attacking and which defending Wink ? Click on the image to get a full size version !

how come that image shows so many dots? i mean, a servers max is 127 but theres way more than that there?

It's not showing all the players currently in the game at that time. What that is showing is the locations that a player was on the map during the entire game.

Meaning where all the yellow dots were, there was a GDI player there at one point in the game.
And where all the red dots are, there was a Nod player there at one point in the game.

Exactly. It can be used for tactical analyses - or just for fun. You can get a good guess where the fights took place in the viewed game; for example in the screeny above, almost all Nod positions where in their own base - while it seems that GDI has beeen attacking with massive firepower, keeping most Nods busy repairing & fighting them.

@CMatt: RenHawk would also be a nice name Wink Google lists three pages of links but they look harmless ...

PS: Did anyone notice that Islands has a new background picture in this picture? It is rendered using orthogonal projection & contains tunnels, thanks to Silent Kane & Grey !

"Renegade Visualization Tool". Why that mouthful? Because that's what it is. It's not a program that replays matches. Not like Half-Life or WarCraft III, anyway. It simply displays dots and lines on previously generated maps, showing who was where, what they were doing, etc. etc. at the given time. While that's still "replaying" the game, it's not replaying it as it was originally played. If that makes sense.

Since there is only one extra suggestion "RenHawk", I count the "Non of the above" voters, as "RenHawk" fans.

I personaly like it as well; Hawks are birds with a very sharp vision. They detect anything that moves; which is basicaly what renvis is doing. Even literaly: During the compression process of the log files, I leave out all POS(ition) lines which do not contain any new information, i.e. where the corresponding vehicle / player did not move.

So renvis sees things like a hawk does ... and the name sounds nice. Have to check if there are any naming conflicts then ... RenReplay doesnt have any, so if RenHawk is somehow used by some company in China, RenReplay is a save alternative Smile

There have been two beta releases.

If you mean one that can be used on a server of your own, I believe that's in the next release.
