Hi, I'm currently looking for a free AV because I am against torrenting and illegal downloading. If anyone knows a GOOD free antivirus, please post here.

There's Microsoft's AV, Security Essentials. I haven't used it myself though because I use Nod32 Razz

If you're sensible with your PC usage, AVG will cover you from the rest. If you (or more likely, if you have inexperienced users on your machine who) are likely to do stupid things, I can't think of anything I've used...

I use Avira. Both it and AVG are great.

I used to use AVG, but I stopped once I realized that it was slowing my computer down to almost half its normal speed. (And this was when it wasn't scanning.)

Currently my choice of free AV is Microsoft Security Essentials... I have heard several reports of AVG being a resource hog so I don't intend to use that again, and Avira, while good, has an extremely irritating habit of popping up adverts asking you to upgrade to the full version every few hours...

Im running windows 7 with avg and it works great for any pc with a decent amount of ram and cpu. Avg is definitely a resource hog. Lavasoft has a free version of their ad-aware for melware and stuff.

Wow, that's a lot of people saying AVG is the best, thanks for the support/opinion/other.

I've used AVG and Avast!, but I think Avira is my favorite. Low resource usage compared to AVG and it doesn't 'feel' like a toy like Avast!.

Don't the regular popups begging you to upgrade to the full version of Avira annoy you? I got fed up of them after a few weeks and uninstalled it....

They only come up once a day, and they're easy to cancel out. It's a free program anyways, and I'm more than happy to click a daily popup if it means I avoid having to spend a whole day reformatting and restoring my files due to a virus.

Plus, I recall there being a method of stopping the popups via registry trick or something.

Meh, they annoyed me so I replaced it with MSE... so far so good. It's only on my laptop anyway, all the other PC's are on my ESET Smart Security licence.

I honestly forgot about that... I fixed that a while ago. It's not a difficult task to remove that, just google around.

Used AVG for the last while, but they recently forced everyone to upgrade to the shitty new version, which has a fun feature of minimizing any application a few times every hour. I currently use Avast.

To be honest, I install AVG at computers I fix, just because I'm used to it. I personally use Nod32 which isn't free.

I guess if I had to use one for myself, I'd take a look at M$'s solution. They don't do a lot for free but usually when they do, it's decent.

Best Free Anti Virus[ 11 votes ]
1. Avast Home Edition Free Antivirus 0 / 0%
2. Avira Personal Free Antivirus 2 / 18%
3. AVG Antivirus Free Edition 5 / 45%
4. Microsoft Security Essentials 1 / 9%
5. Other 3 / 27%

I am curious to see what free av people use. I think most people use AVG because it is most common. I think im going to try Microsoft security essentials and see how it performs compared to avg.

I don't feel any resource hogging from AVG, but that could be difficult to feel on Vista...

Canadacdn, I don't have AVG minimising applications...?!
