If ever there was a nuclear incident at a car dealership, the only cars left standing would be the Hondas and the Volvos. Get the Civic. I can tell you firsthand they last forever. I drive a '95 Civic DX, and she still runs like a charm.

I think we simply need more info about the cars to judge (milage, price, year of construct, been accidenetd or not, ...).

If you get a new one, then it doesn't really matter that much, unless you wanna use it for 10+ years.

The Camry isn't a really compelling car in its class compared to the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion or Mazda 6, unless Toyota is offering 'cash on the hood' which is likely.

The Civic is a good choice if you want something smaller, and good economy but you can always look at a new, nicely optioned 2008 Mazda3 which will be a little more fun to drive, and likely cheaper.

Get a Malibu hybrid. Chevy's last forever, at least they used to. Our 95 Suburban is just now starting to fall apart after 14 years of hard use and 230,000 miles.

you could also look into nissan altima. since its in the same price range as the camry. has better looks and interior in my opinion, and better gas milage.

and i think they just lowered the starting price on the altimas in US.

yes i will give you this, i am biased since i have a 2008 altima. have had it since september. I personally can not say anything bad about the car. well except the paint is fairly easy to scratch, but other than that its a great spacious car.

but if you are only looking at civic vs camry. the civic has a more sporty and tight suspension and steering. while the camry has more room and comfort.

i personally always said that honda is for young people, and toyota is for older folks... i would say that there is not much difference between the two when it comes to quality.

but i do strongly suggest you look at the altima, because of the CVT continuosly variable transmission it is really good on gas.

both the 2.5l 4 Cylinder, and the 3.5l v6 are the best gas milage in their class and most horsepower and torque in their class.

well good choice on the nissan, but cube? that thing only has 122hp, when you seat 4 average north american people in there you will barely be able to get to the posted speed limit.

i grant you that the cubes are cool inside, and come with a built in sub woofer. but on the outside in my opinion they look butt ugly.

nissan rogue on the other hand is nice, gets good gas milage and still has 175hp.

the all wheel drive rogues come with "intuitive all wheel drive" basically you take off in all whell drive, then it switches to front wheel, and back to all wheel when you take corners and go offroading or need the torgue.

yes i have been looking into those cars as well Big Grin

also if you need to have another opinion on the altima, ask Blazer or Crimson about theirs. Blazer has had one for 2-3 years i believe.

but he has the 2 door coupe altima, while i got the sedan.

I wouldn't waste your time on a used 350Z, the 370Z is a HUGE improvement over the 350. And I thought Blazer had a Maxima, not an Altima?

You really should have a much longer list, and not limit yourself to one or two brands. Kick tires at all the major brands if you're buying new, or consult sources like Edmunds, Consumer Reports, and JD Power if you're looking at something used.

It'd be helpful if you gave us an idea of what exactly you're looking for, too. Do you want something that's really fuel-efficient? Are you looking for something that'll be fun to drive, or a car that can take five people at a time, etc.

when i was shopping for a car last year, i did tons of research.

i test drove passat, GLI (jetta), accord, camry and altima.

after that i looked at price difference, reported quality and issues with cars over last 5 years. then gas milage vs horsepower for all of the above.

when you look at gas milage vs horsepower dont forget to look at type of fuel used as well.

a 20mpg/250hp car running on 91octane is alot different than 20mpg/250hp car running on 89octane...

also look at warranties even though most nowdays are really close to eachother.

another thing you should know is that all nissan vehicles come with timing chain nowdays. so at 100k or whatever it is you dont need to replace your timing belt you readjust the timing chain which saves you about 400$ or more right there.

basically whenever you like it or not alot of it is going to be based on your personal preference. like whenever or not you like the interior of a car or the look of it outside thats totally up to you.

but i will however say that you need quality and reliability numbers to look at as well. thats when you go on google and look for "issues with 2008 altima" or whatever it is you want to find.

one thing about the 350z is that they are not well engineered, i read online that they have uneven tire wear on all 4 tires, and suspension problems. im not sure if its the same for the new ones but since you said you were buying a used one i would say watch out.

also from my experience i will never buy another used car.

i bought a 2003 mitsu galant back in 05. it was 2 years old with only 49k kilometers on it, and seriously it was the biggest piece of shit. im now saving money by having a new car that is reliable and doesnt need 200$ a month to keep it on the road.

but thats just me.

oh and i know for a fact blazer has a 2 door altima, i asked him a few times about how he liked it and this and that about the car before i bought mine.

plus maximas dont come as coupe's.

EDIT: responce to Goodonedriver

well you may be interested to see jetta's and passat then because they are nice looking and have decent pull. only thing i can say about them is parts a more expensive to replace cause cars are german. and in early 2000-04 VW had sludge problems.

not sure about now.
you definetly want to look at accord, and altima, as well as toyotas knock off of the altima aka the new camry.

i dont look at domestics cause of the terrible resale value. however i have been warming up to ford fusion lately.
so maybe check that out.

all the cars i listed should fit 4 adults nicely, except for jetta. its got nothing for leg room in th back seat.

im not listing corolla or other cars in its class like the nissan sentra cause they seem guttless to me.

Yeah, what you're looking for is pretty broad. Just take a day or so and head to an auto-mall or a bunch of dealerships from all the different brands. Find what you like, get to know the vehicles, and you'll start narrowing down the choices, or discover ones you never thought of. You should be able to find good financial incentives, too. Most of all, do your research, because a car is a big decision.

There is one car that I think would fit most of your needs, and can be had for a decent price new or used. : The Pontiac G8 V6.

http://www.g8nation.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/carscom-reviews-2008-pontiac-1.jpg

Fuel economy isn't like a Civic because it's a bigger car, but it's a nice one.

I'll also echo Romaner's concerns about the 350Z. Adding to chassis issues, they were popular with late-20/early-30's men, so a lot of them were driven hard. Some I've seen were nightmares when it came to the drivetrain, and electronics because of poor installations/removals of aftermarket stereo's. Have a good mechanic check out the used vehicles you really like, because they'll spot things you won't.

They are helpful, but CarFax can be full of errors. Buying a car because the CarFax report says it's OK can be a huge mistake.

does carfax even show how much work a dealer does on the car? or does it only show what has been reported by the police and insurance in regards to the car.

cause lets say the cars engine is toast, and you bring it to the dealer and get engine rebuilt. if all carfax is showing is insurance data like accidents well your car may have never been in one but now it has a rebuilt engine in it...

btw nikki, that pontiac is definetly a beast, but its fuel milage reflects that.

again you compare the milage to hp ration on that pontiac to say the nissan altima 3.5L v6 which now gets 270hp i believe and you will be amazed at the difference.

and like i said before i didnt mention domestics because of poor resale value.

however goodonedriver if you are 100% sure you will keep this car for atleast 8 years then really there is not going to be much of a difference in 8-10 years on the price of the altima vs the G8 cause they will both be under 5k, thats my guess anyways.
