I can't figure out how i can change my setting back to it's original one. every time i try to open up a folder, the damn search pops up. I right click and the bolded command is "Search..." It used to be "Open" but for some reason it was switched. I've removed all spyware and viruses on my computer and restarted but yet it doesn't change back and I can't figure out why.

Open up My Computer, then menu:

Tools-> Folder Options-> "File Types" Tab.

Wait for the list to populate, then scroll down until you find the "(NONE) Folder" file type. Click the item, then the 'advanced' button.

If you then see the 'open' command in there, just set it as default.

yeah, but there was no "open" option so i made my own, but i didn't know what it's normal default it, so i had it open explorer, which didn't work at all. so i pretty much need to know exactly what the settings on it are.

Remove any 'open' entries that you have made.
Create a new text file with a .REG extension, then paste the following code and save it.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open]
"BrowserFlags"=dword:00000010
"ExplorerFlags"=dword:00000012

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\command]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
  00,5c,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,\
  65,00,20,00,2f,00,69,00,64,00,6c,00,69,00,73,00,74,00,2c,00,25,00,49,00,2c,\
  00,25,00,4c,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec]
@="[ViewFolder(\"%l\", %I, %S)]"
"NoActivateHandler"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec\application]
@="Folders"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec\ifexec]
@="[]"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\ddeexec\topic]
@="AppProperties"

Then just run the REG file and click 'yes' to the prompt.

This is pretty much a work-around way of doing the same thing as if you'd gone through the 'Folder Options>File Types' tab.

My bad, just insert this new line at the start of the REG file.

If using Win95/98/2000/ME...
REGEDIT4

If using Windows XP...
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

You could have called me... FAT32 is a more stable file system... NTFS is for secure businesses that is very new and most programs are still working with FAT32.

my main programs still work, it took me 4 hours to get everything set back the way i wanted to (including installation and conversion of formats). I still have a couple more programs to install yet to make it back to the way i want.

Apologies for bumping this old thread, but this needs to be said....

I've just had the exact same problem as you're experiencing, and thankfully i found out what the cause and cure is.

Quote:

This problem occurs when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types.

This problem occurs even if you do not create a new action, edit existing actions, or change the default action in the Edit File Type dialog box.

For future reference to people, here is the fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Basically, it's yet another rediculous bug inside Windows XP. :rolleyes:
