There is nothing wrong with Windows 7... so I'm not wasting money on an upgrade.

I'll upgrade when Windows 7 is obsolete. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I installed Windows 8 and Processor/RAM jumped from 7.9/7.8 to 8.4, but now the scale changed making my 256GB Vertex 4 SSD the "slowest" piece of hardware in my computer.

I'll stick with standard hard drives for now, give SSDs a few more years to run into all the bugs; not in any real rush to get a faster disc yet anyway; I start my computer before I get into the shower in the morning, so boot time has never been an issue for me.

As for windows 8, our server owner was running a beta of windows 8 for a while for his server, and the FDS usually averaged around 6-8 fps slower than it does now that he moved back to 7 (internal test server, not actual). However, it's possible they have cleaned it up more since the beta and maybe it runs better now.

I am disappointed about the start menu being removed; back in the day I wouldn't have cared as I used to have stuff all over my desktop; but more recently the only thing I keep on it is recycle bin. It seems like this start window (whatever they call it) is more like another desktop instead of an organized list lol.

At first, the new start screen didn't bother me. I'm normally using it for a few seconds at most. But then I realized that unified search is gone; no more finding apps/settings/files requires either starting search with a different keyboard shortcut than "winkey" or 3 other keystrokes to switch the filter afterwards. Then I found "Start8" which claimed to bring back the start menu from 7 and it does a great job (unified search and everything.)

While not unified you can do <startbutton> <arrow down> and select what you're searching for that way. If that's the only problem...

If I need to find something I just tap the "Win" key to open the Start Menu and then I just start typing my search query.
It'll default to searching in 'Apps' (everything in your Start Menu) but you can select another location on the right hand side.

Doing that just selects the second tile on the screen, not what I want.

Right, and I've been doing that since Vista; I'm fine with the whole start screen because I'm usually only in there for a couple of seconds because of quick searching. With the filtered search (and the inability to just have it search *everything* at once) I'd have to remember to use the appropriate shortcut to start searching (winkey+w/q/f), click on the filter, or remember the non-intuitive keystrokes to change filter after I've already started searching; not cool.

You really want apps/shortcuts and settings unified that bad?
I haven't been bothered by the fact that it was filtered. TBH I hadn't even noticed they split up settings from apps/shortcuts untill you mentioned the missing unified search. I automatically use the filter I need without a thought whatsoever. Been doing so since the first time I used W8 xD

/If you hadn't said anything I might have never noticed it tbh lol

Bad enough to toss a couple of bucks at some other programmers that fixed it? Yeah. If I was using only this computer, I'd gripe a bit and then deal with it. But I need to use quite a few different computers for work and it's bad enough keeping Windows and Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts straight.

Have to agree, still keep tying myself in knots when transitioning back and forth between 'real' Windows and metroland though...

Going to resist installing start8 or similar to give it a chance...

That movie is flawed. Bunch of noobs using a system they know nothing about.
They are even missing the most obvious stuff which is right on their screen!
