It's because the Chinese student spoke English and Chinese and all you guys spoke is Spanish, or at least that's what the bad typing suggests.

Probably because someone from another country is a rarity in iceland or wherever you were an exchange student to, while a chinese exchange student in america isn't very fascinating because america is a multicultural country where you know people of all races every since first grade.
