Can someone please tell me if Renegade is still operating online and if so how would I be able to get hooked up to play?

#1 you need a valid Copy of Renegade.
#2 you need a valid serial number.

Once installed you need to make sure you have patch 1.037 installed unless you are running the First Decade version.

You also will need Core Patch 1 (and or 2) installed as well as Sripts.dll v3.4

and I do not know where Core Patch 1 and 2 are.

It's still operating online via XWIS and GSA. You need to have the 1.037 update like halo2pac, the scripts.dll 3.4 is optional but really recommended as it improves huge parts of the game (loading time is significantly reduced for example).

If you want to use the GSA list to join, you can use this utility. Note that joining WOL/XWIS servers with it is broken:
