A lot of drugs are banned as well, some for good reasons, but a lot are just banned because of culture. Quite a lof of drugs are less damaging and/or less addicting than alcohol, while alcohol is freely available and drugs are not.
If alcohol where to be invented today then it would most likely be banned.
