I don't understand what's going on with my monitor. I just came home from work, turned on my PC, and noticed that everything is annoyingly bright.

I've tried adjusting the brightness of the monitor, but adjusting that seems to change something completely different. The brightness of the monitor goes down, but the brightness and 'shine' of all the colors on the screen is still really bright.

Then I tried adjusting it through the video card settings. That works much better, however it's not the effect I want.

It seems as if the mode of the monitor or the signal its getting has been altered somehow. I can see slight pulsations/waves on the screen under darker colors. Any were there is black, it looks like a really dark green. And in those black/green areas, I can see what I can only describe as pixels (not actual pixels, but that's how I would describe its look. Basically a buildup of many tiny boxes.)

A few days ago, I got a new LCD TV, and since recently (2 days ago) I've been using it, on and off, as a second monitor (Extended desktop.) It uses a different resolution than my primary monitor (smaller resolution even though it's a larger screen.) I've been enabling/disabling multiple monitors whenever I felt like using it. I haven't had any problems that would relate to this color/brightness problem I'm having with my primary monitor.

I've tried swapping the output ports of the monitor cables on my video card. I've tried completely disconnecting the TV's cable. I've rebooted the PC many times. I've reinstalled my drivers. I reset the monitor to factory defaults.

I've also tried lowering the resolution of my monitor. That seems to have the desired effect, however it makes everything on the screen fuzzy and the pixilation and wavy effects are much more dramatic and noticeable.

I have a 19" LCD monitor. The model number is L1916HW (google it). I run it at 1680x1050. I have a Nvidia GeForce 9800GT. It has two DVI outputs, but I use a converter that changes the connection to a VGA port (for both my TV and my monitor.)

I'm at a total loss of what to do. I've been messing around with options and settings for 3 hours now and nothing is working..

Any help would be appreciated.

Does taking a screenshot of the problem show the problem?

If the screenshot of your monitor doing weird things look normal, it's something to do with the connections or the monitor, if the screenshot is abnormal, it could be the graphics card.

Have you tried switching out the cables?

I'll try both of your suggestions when I get back home.

Oh yeah, you'll need to look at the screenshot on a WORKING monitor, or you won't be able to tell the difference! Very Happy

Upload it here if you haven't got one.

I just used my TV as the working monitor.

1. The screenshot I took on my disrupted monitor looks perfectly normal on a working monitor.
2. I swapped out the cable between my TV and my monitor and the problem didn't go away.

So that means that there is either:
A. Something wrong with the monitor's settings
B. Something wrong with the monitor itself. :\

Try using the "factory reset" option on your monitor's controls. (Press the "menu" button and look around)

It's still under warranty, so if I can find the receipt, I can send it in for repairs.

I just need to find a way to prove that the problem is the monitor itself.

Try getting a laptop (borrow a friend's or something) and seeing if plugging your monitor in has the same problem.

I have a laptop. And that's a good idea.

Edit:
Ok, I just tried hooking up to my laptop and it is still messed up.

There has to be something wrong with the monitor. I have one more test I want to try, but I don't have the correct cable. I'm going to try to use a DVI cable in place of the VGA cable. Maybe there is something wrong with the analog receiver... so perhaps using a digital signal might have better luck.

That's a good idea, TBH it's probably the display hardware itself.
(As in, the actualy pixels that make up the screen, not the recievers)

I got my DVI cable today (I'm an idiot and bought a 3ft one, which just barely makes the distance)

And I do notice an excellent visual improvement over what I had before. Everything is much more crisp and clean.

As for the problem, it's definitely less apparent.. it's barable now.. but it still exists.

Since I can't find the receipt, I'm going to have to get a new one Sad.

Anyway, thanks for all your help guys. Much appreciated.

I got a new monitor and every thing seems fine. It must have been something wrong with the other monitor.

I feel kind of bad though... because the other monitor was a gift that cost like $200 and technically still works.. and I replaced it 6 months later :\
