Help please.
I dusted off my fairly old copy of Renegade to see how it would rn on my spiffy new games machine but every time we get to the select directory screen it gives the error message:
The path is not valid. You cannot install to a Windows or system directory. Please select a different directory.
This happens with teh default or any other directory regardless of whether the directory exists or not.
I am sure it used to work long ago, how to get round this?

Alas, no luck. won't install to
C:\Program Files\Westwood\Renegade
either.
I've tried changing the attributes (-s, -r) in a command prompt window, and that hasn't helped, either. Not absolutely sure it worked, mind you, the 'Read Only' box still had a green square, not a check mark, when I looked again.

Yes, my default account is admin. I've tried installing in safe mode as an administrator, without success, unfortunately.
I've also tried manually copying the files over from the CD but attempting to run then produces a message saying 'set working directory'.
And almost certainly I missed something in the copyover...
What is the directory structure below Renegade supposed to be?
And how many files in each?
Anyone know?

23 Gb spare at the moment.
I think it's some sort of weird XP/SP3 issue over what constitutes a protected directory. But I've no idea how to address it.

No, no spare partition, unfortunately.
I had a bit of issue with hard drives during an upgrade last weekend and am presently having to run CD and EIDE drive on the same cable. Just until I get a SATA drive organised. At that point I will have spare drives that can be dedicated to REN.
I've an idea that this was an issue first time I installed it (6 or so years ago now, IIRC) but I had a separate partition then.

As far as I know, you can't uninstall SP3 if you have a slipstreamed version. Else I wouldn't recommend uninstalling it since it can ruin your whole XP (a friend of mine did the same)

Hum!
That's a thought. When I install the SATA disk, I could install XP from my original CD (includes SP 2) then install REN before getting the 50 or so updates that are needed.

I think my copy (dates from 2002) just won't install on the primary partition.

I think you forgot to set writing permissions for the system drive.

Don't think so, everything else installs without a problem, including older and younger C&C items. And, IIRC, Renegade has been the same on at least two hard drives. I think it's a bug in the early version of the install program.
