To sum it all up, you'll be able to have any domain name, so instead of website.com, it can be website.anything

Only for a few million bucks though.

The idea is probably that if you buy it for say 1,000,000 $, you'll resell domain names for it at about 10-15 $ per piece. If you sell enough, you'll make a benefit.

I think this is really cool.

Now businesses will be able to categorize their FQDN by any TLD and won't be limited to the current selection, which no one cares about anyways... Everyone goes for .com's even though their site has nothing to do with commercial products.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out, most likely companies will buy out the TLD's with common words/names and whore out the domains to the highest bidder.

I, along with thousands of other artists have accounts there, but no, it's not my personal site.

Actual site is: www.furaffinity.net - Currently down due to hardware failure.

And no matter what you say, some of the artwork there is really good.

Would expect to get a lot of scams from this, e.g. amazon.con and the like. Also would be a lot harder for multinational companies to buy every domain that resembles their name Listen

Maybe, but according to ICANN the new TLD's will have to go through a verification process.
Quote:

Offensive names will be subject to an objection-based process based on public morality and order. This process will be conducted by an international arbitration body utilizing criteria drawing on provisions in a number of international treaties. ICANN will not be the decision maker on these objections.

And it will be mostly domain registrars who will be buying the TLD's so they can profit off the FQDN's sold to everyday customers with personal websites. Whether they would want their company name associated with questionable TLD's I wouldn't know, though.

Edit: I got the quote from this page, you can visit for more info.

I think some of you forget that the new TLDs won't exactly be cheap. It won't be random idiots buying TLDs, unless they have the money to shell out for something that will only be funny for another year. Perhaps we'll see Paris Hilton purchasing .thatshot.
