When you say things like "Religious people..." and "everyone else..." it sure sounds like you're speaking for everyone in that group. He never said anything like "most" or "some" or "the extremists", not even "the loudest group within". So I'd say that counts as saying all.

Your being hypocritical. You just said that I never said anything like "most" or "some."

Then you go on to say that means I meant to say "all."

I didn't say all, and I didn't say most, I didn't specify any amount. I think that the group of people, not everyone, not some, but the group in general. I have no idea how many people think like that, therefore I left the actual count out.

I will never say all or none in such a way, especially when it relates to people's own morals.

If you still don't understand what I mean than here is an example.
We got 2 religious people. Both of the same religion however one is more strongly religious.
What I meant by that comment was the one who is so strongly religious that they are blinded to everything else, not the other guy.

You know what pisses me off, starbuzz? You're bashing on many religions.

You shouldn't call people idiots or retards or ignorant for being wrong, not that I'm saying that we're wrong. But you've said the word "ignorant" dozens of times now. I'd continue debate about religion with you, but stop acting like a 5 year old, and stop bashing on the Christian religion.

Practically everything you said made Christians and other religious people look like they're freakin gangsters running around and murdering people and using threats to make them believe whatever!

I'm ok if you try and convince us that Christianity is wrong, but insulting and bashing isn't going to make me change my mind.

Go ahead, give me verses that'd "blow me away"

Starbuzz

Because our beliefs are NOT based in myths and illusions but in logic and objectivity?

Please don't make sensationalist false claims when you clearly have not made an effort to understand the philosophy behind Atheism. I thoroughly resent this false statement you made as it is the highest form of intellectual injustice that is targeted at Atheists and Agnostics today.

Yeah, because if we think we are the highest life forms, then we are automatically arrogant right?

FYI, the knowledge that we are the highest life form leads to humbleness and the highest level of responsibility as human beings rather than a feeling of arrogance as you falsely claim. Claims such as yours are the usual garbage thrown at Atheists by religious folks; the same self-righteous folks who claim the world is full of sinners in need of salvation (like as if there are no other problems to solve).

Also, I feel more responsible as an Agnostic than I ever was as a Christian. And I was a devout Christian at that. But I was indifferent; I saw the world as sinners and believers just as you do today. You can't go about solving the world's problems with that attitude. As an Agnostic, I see EVERONE as a human being and have a greater respect for human life, the world we live in, the environment that we must protect for future generations and the animal species that must be preserved. There is no place for "the earth is going to end" bull.

I feel disgusted when Bible thumpers get all excited and hyped up when Israel goes to war because apparently these are the "end-times."

Wow, you are a blowhard.

Since when do people feel humble when they view themselves as superiors? The VAST MAJORITY of people with power are arrogant fucktards. Very few people are humbled by the power of which they hold.

The fact that you claim what I said is sensationalist is proof enough of your utter arrogance on the subject.

I realize that I omitted the question mark, but I thought it was clear that it was just a simple question on the flip side of what you were arguing. Thanks for blowing it out of proportion as if that's meant to be some attack. Who's being the sensationalist, now?

Just because you've come to regret your upbringing doesn't mean you're any more stable mentally than you were as a devout Christian. Ever think that you possibly hold the same arrogance as you did then? It sure looks like it to me. Then, perhaps, it's not the religion that made you arrogant. Maybe it's just you.

Oh, and don't ever think you can label me as a Bible thumper. Again, that just shows your blatant arrogance on the issue. Everybody who disagrees with you MUST be a Bible thumper because why else would people disagree. Right? Wrong. I'm a Theist, thank you very much. I don't believe in the Bible anymore, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start bashing Christians for believing what they do. You, for whatever fucked up reason (ie. arrogance), feel that it's your job to keep up your rebellion. Good job, you're certainly making Atheism and Agnosticism more attractive world views.

Oh, and again, you only need to look no further than yourself to see that your claim of humbleness is defeated.

Since when in time did Atheists view themselves as superior to anything? You need to do a lot of reading to understand the philosophy behind Atheism. Don't talk like you are an expert when you don't have the slightest clue. And also, Atheists hold no power whatsoever in their mere beliefs.

That said, the rest of your post is garbage.

And yes, calling me "arrogant" and referring to my upbringing and classifying this debate as my continued "rebellion" shows your total lack of judgment. It is certaintly a good way to blow off your steam. You guys do an excellent job of defending your beliefs: by name-calling and "e-screaming."

If I were here as a Chrisitan, I would have replied to all of Starbuzz's posts with my faith and the Bible...something some here are totally incapable of doing. Thumbs Up

If you cared to read my post, it is pretty clear I was referring to the Rapturists and the "End-Times" madmen as the Bible thumpers. Unless you are one like that, you were not being labeled that.

An Atheist's humblenss is in context with other living beings. To say that I am not humble because I question and debate and argue is the most arrogant statement I ever heard. We have too many people in this world who shut up and sit tight afraid to voice their opinions.

The fact that you think man is humbled by the idea that they are alone in the world as far as "supreme beings" go is funny. Religious people, as a whole, are just as humbled. There are plenty of VERY intelligent people that are Christians.

There are the annoying extremists and fundamentalists who make it a point to judge others, but that's not religion as a whole. Again, just because you're rebelling against the fundamentalism that you were brought up into doesn't mean you're any more humbled than religious people as a whole. More humbled than your parents? Possibly, but don't make me laugh by claiming that people are humbled by admitting to the idea that there's no god.

Stop calling me a Christian. It doesn't help your argument to lump me in with fundamentalists. It just shows that you're just throwing out random shit at me after getting pissy with my first paragraph or two.

Edit: Oh, you removed the part where you implied I was a Christian still. Good catch... though I made it obvious.

One example of someone was a "devout atheist"-turned-chrsitan who is well received in both the literary world and the philosophy world is C.S. Lewis.

I don't find that the person who wrote a piece of shit like chronicles of narnia to be some super intellectual.

Warranto completely ignores current religious trends and brings up a few exceptional examples from ages past.

Quote:

A staunch atheist at the time, Strobel decided to use his journalism and legal training to investigate whether there was any credibility to Christianity.

What kind of an idiot Atheist (a staunch one at that) needs to investigate further to find any "credibility" to an opposing school of thought? Haha...this guy had no initiative. He does not deserve to be called an Atheist. No wonder he converted to Christianity like the mis-informed jelly-doughnut that he was.

Also, warranto, this is the most recent information on the state of things today (dated Feb 25, 2008):
http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/02/25/religion.survey.ap/index.html?ire f=newssearch

Happy reading! Wink
