The thing is, I have yet to be proven wrong. All you've done is repeatedly say that TPB currently prohibits child porn and it's one of the few things they WILL moderator for. However, you haven't proven that this has always been their policy. I'm waiting...

To make it easier for you, I'll just prove you wrong right now.

Wikipedia

Whether child pornography was to be found on The Pirate Bay or not, it was their official policy not to remove any content that has been labeled correctly, even if it is child porn. As they said in their contact page (added somewhere near 19.2.2007):

we do not remove any content, what-so-ever, if it is not wrongly labeled. Seriously, NO content will be removed. Whatever it is. Do not even write to us about it.

Presence is a curious thing, if you think you need to prove it... you probably never had it in the first place.

The Songwriters Association of Canada is proposing a $5 tax on every internet connection in Canada, so a subscriber can download as many illegal songs as they wish.

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080221/song_downloads_AM_0 80221/20080221?hub=TopStories

I don't download music; instead, I buy it. But five bucks a month extra on my internet connection IS a hell of a bargain compared to the $160 I spent on CD's yesterday.

Same idiocy as with taxes on empty cd's: let's tax everyone, that even though only few actually do download music illegally.

One other option my country is considering is upping the taxes on mp3 players. Some estimates say a 60-80 GB iPod would have have a $75 dollar tax.

Personally, I think the best way to do this, is to tax the heaviest users OF bandwidth. For example, anyone who downloads 120GB+ should get taxed at a higher level than someone like myself.

One problem however... is that how much of that 120+ is going just to music, and how much is being used for videos, or programs?

Still, $60 a year in taxes to cover music downloads is a friggin' bargain. Just yesterday, I spent $165 on 10 CD's. Although I'd likely still buy CD's, I'd happily download music just to see if it's worth the purchase or not.

The government should just stay out of it as a whole. Net Neutrality FTW.

Record companies just need to offer FLAC versions of albums for download at a discounted price. Then, allow people to make as many backups as they want. I'd be more apt to purchase CDs for $8 online than spend $15 on one in a store.

I agree on the bandwidth thing. It would be bad for me because I surpass about 500GB+ Per month (im at 320GB atm), but it would better the internet infrastructure. The only reason ISPs are getting involved in the debate at all is because we (BT users) max out their 20 year old connections, so if it was by bandwidth, they would ATLEAST have to upgrade to all 100mbps switches, which is a start. When will they learn people dont pay $50/month for broadband to used the internet for text-based browing anymore..

Since Jan 28th, I've used less than 1GB... Dont Get It

I think I just lost at the internet.

Anyhow, I was watching the news, and there may actually be some Parliamentary (Canadian) support for a user pay system where levies on bandwidth are implemented.

Estimates suggest it would bring in at least half a billion dollars annually, which would be distributed not only to the music industry, but also to other media industries. That's a decent chunk of change.

So no more downloading Linux distro's and game demo's? Even bandwith doesn't work unless you start scanning content, which is against any privacy law.

Piracy has been encouraged by the music industry for long enough: asking 20 EUR for 13 songs was for long time the norm...

Its doesn't matter the content, because it was never suggested that the money go to anyone apart from the ISP Sarcasm Who they will end up having to pay is their own problem Thumbs Up

Governments are funny. When will they learn that they work best if they just stick to the basics such as police, military, fire, and road construction?

If the ISP wants to charge for bandwidth usage, fine. That's the ISPs priority. However, any government can kiss my ass if they think they should enforce taxation on bandwidth usage. They don't control the Internet.
