I accept the fact that planet Earth has the 1 in n chance of being able to support human life. Where n is all the variables stacked against us.
But given the size of the entire universe is unknown, and potentially it is continually expanding, 1 in n chance of a planet being able to support life doesn't seem so un-likely when you consider the Universe's vast-ness.
Also, the variables for supporting human life may not be the same for supporting other forms of life we do not know about.
If a darwin approach is to be applied literally universally you could expect that in very hot planets there are creatures that can only exist in very hot enviroments.
Who knows.. There may be some alien out there explaining to his community that the idea of life out-side his planet is ridiculous because there is such a little chance of there being a planet that exists with such environments ot support the type of life indiginous to his planet.
Given that time is infinant, this may have also happened a billion years ago, or may happen in another billion years and we're all extinct. :S
Interesting thread.
