Ok, so my sister is going off to uni, and she's got a new laptop. It's a couple of days until she "gets" it (It's her birthday on thursday) but I'm wondering what should I do with the battery? I've tried searching Google, but I can't find anything.

What should you do to a new laptop battery?

One hint: if you use the wire for long periods of time, then take the battery out.

Also leaving the laptop plugged in with the battery fully charged often shortens the batteries lifespan...

I think he means initially. I would recommend charging for at least a day, maybe more, after that regular charging/recharging. Check the type, Lithium-based batteries don't have memory so can be charged from any level, Nickel-based need to be drained fully else they lose charge faster.
