ctfmon.exe as well pops up on my taskmgr here and there.

I just ignore it, I think it has something to do with Windows Security Center, once I disabled that, it disappeared. Give it a try.

ctfmon is a background application used for alternative user input in Microsoft Office.

I don't have office, and when I turned off Windows Security Center it disappeared. Can ctfmon.exe have anything to do with any other process?

I don't even have Microsoft Office, I use OpenOffice, and this still pops up in my task manager.

Just what I said. I don't have it and it pops up.

I have noticed a couple of things.

1) It can be Windows Security Center
2) It can be graphics card drivers.
3) It randomly pops up.
4) When it starts up, its off.

To completely disable Cftmon, you have to unregister a dll. Click start -> Run... and type the following:

Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll

You said the PC is slow.

Try Start/run/msconfig/ then select the very last tab on the right, untick all the boxes until you have only the antivirus boxes ticked. Press apply/restart now........and that will be everything taken away from the startup menu that may be causing the PC to run slow.

Now check your system with Ad-aware, Spybot etc.

I removed CTFmon.exe yesterday and have no problems. Start-up is done in less than a minute from booting up, to a fully functional screen.
