Ok, I have a Dlink DSl-G604T. That did just fine, until a power surge killed -one- ethernet port, leaving me with three. (need four) I want a wired network for performance, so should I get a new router, or buy a switch?

Why would it just kill one?

i would go for a switch. i got myself an eight port gigabit switch for example. so all our computers (most also with gigabit nic) are connected to this switch and theres only one "uplink" to the router. if you ask me i would always go for this solution either than relying on the ports of your router!

We, for example, had to change our router three times in 2 or 3 years now. first cable-router (2mbit), then an ADSL1 router (6mbit) and now a brand-new ADSL2+ router (16mbit). so a switch would obviously "last" longer. plus the cable-router only had one ethernet port, so we needed an extra switch anyways.

A switch it is then, as they're also in my budget. Wink

I don't know why it would only kill one, chances are it was the only one active when we were hit...

You'll just have some more trouble forwarding ports if you need to do this.

Switch/Hub. Switch is better but you can find 4 port hubs for practically nothing.

Tis ok, I'll have a couple of spare ethernet ports on the router, and I can use those to port forward when needed.

I'm thinking of a five port D-link one, http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&pro duct_id=10249697&pid=0&rstrat=0

port forwarding hasnt _anything_ to do with using an (additional) switch.

dlink 5 port is okay, though you could get a 5port switch with the same quality for less.
for example i could get an "Allnet" 5port 10/100 switch for about 12 euro. i have some Allnet products for some years now and theyre pretty good: an 8port switch 10/100 for 20euro, an 8port switch 10/100/1000 (gigabit) for ~60euro and a 24port switch 10/100 for also ~60 euro.
but then again the dlink will also do the trick Razz

Ofcourse it has. I have a router connected to my wireless switch at home. To forward ports I need the router to forward to the switch and the switch to forward to the computer. It's double as much work + it took me a while, as n00by, to find this out.

then, your wireless "switch" is also a router. a _switch_ works on a whole different layer/protocol (review the OSI model for example) and only forwards any ethernet traffic. plus a real switch hasnt even the possibility to set anything up so... Wink

Routers: OSI Layer 3 (Network layer)

Switches ("intelligent hubs"): OSI Layer 2 (Data Link Layer)

Hubs: OSI Layer 1 (Physical/Bit Layer)

When people ask me "Plz" just because it's shorter than "Please" I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because it's shorter then "Yes"

right.. plus even switch is more a marketing word. a switch is in fact a network bridge: wiki:network_bridge
very interesting wiki-page. the OSI stuff also gets explained a little bit there Wink

Switch = multi-port bridge...However, plain switches should be available from most computer/networking dealers...

While true switches operate at layer 2 there are also layer 3 switches.
As a general rule you should always switch when you can, route when you must.
