here goes im building my own comp and i stuck do i get normal ram(1gb) or Ddr(512 my dad says this is the same as the 1gb normal). what is the difference between the two?

They are definitely not the same. DDR > "normal" RAM.

i disagree... the "normal" ram these days is ddr2 so:

"normal" > DDR.

you gotter tell us what you cll "normal" though.

I think what he means by "normal" is SDRAM. SDRAM is a different size, so if you already have SDRAM in your motherboard, you're not going to be able to fit DDR unless you buy a new motherboard.

By the way, DDR2 completely fails.

For a start as far as I know, DDR and SD won't fit in the same motherboard, so I'm assuming you don't have a mobo yet. (If you do, then you've already chosen your ram)

I don't know which is faster, but here's an analogy:

512DDR is like a 2 lane 100mph road
1024SD is like a 4 lane 70mph road.

In a speed race, 512DDR is better, but it will get filled up faster and slow you down if you're doing lots of things at the same time.

I would recommend no less than 768 RAM nowadays.

You can get 1GB of DDR cheaper than 1GB of SDRAM.

SDRAM blows. As far as I know, it was one of the first ram modules made.

DDR is right in the middle of SDRAM and DDR2.

DDR2 is the best type of ram out there right now.

RAM is more important then the CPU in the long run, so if you want to invest in a fast computer, invest $300+ in 2GB of DDR2.

open up task maneger and you can see how much ram each program is using, add this up and you will see why most of it is wasted.

DDR2 isn't better at all. It may have faster clock speeds, but the timings are REALLY BAD.

before SDRAM there was DRAM, and before that they were SIMMs. I still have a bunch of 256KB SIMMs in a box somewhere.

I have 2 512 MB SDRAM, but also my motherboard is stock. Dell, runs renegade fine though, so, honestly it shouldn't matter.

I still don't know what the difference is between the two; say we compair 1 GB SDRAM and a 1 GB DDR, what's the difference?

The technologies provide different bus speeds. And often things such as cpu clock and motherboard FSB are overlooked.

For example, my shitty rig has a 1.5Ghz athlon processor running on a 266mhz bus. My memory is 333mhz (pc2700). My motherboard is a 400mhz bus. With all three of these things working together, my system is running at 266 and physically cannot go faster than that because of the weakest link. My CPU is a bottleneck - and a crappy one at that. Soon I plan on upgrading to a 2.2Ghz 333fsb cpu, which will in turn make more use out of my motherboard and RAM.

Going back to the examples given, DDR is definitely better than any SDRAM you'll find megabyte -to- megabyte. I think the last SDRAM I used was pc133, and DDR is pc2100/2700 (right around there). Huge difference in speed. But unfortunately you will be restricted based on the capacity (slots) of your motherboard. So max out with what you have and try to keep your memory in equal pairs if possible.
