I just recently bought a new hardrive, a 160 GB and when i try to use it, my computer goes the the setup, yadda yadda, then it says its gotta reboot.

So then, when it does, it says hardrive not detectable, any helps?

Btw, its an HP compaq ME edition, the fat ugly ones that by the end of this year, i will be upgrading.

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".

From the left, select "Disk Managament". It should show in there.

Now, before I recommend formatting anything, was the drive blank when you got it and can you safely format it?

Can you see it in Disk Management? Did you set the jumper properly?

And why does it need to be formatted if its brand new.

Right now, i have it hooked up to the secondary port.
Not doing anything....just pretty much sittin there as im talking to you now.

Oh, just to let you guys now, when i first tryed to use it, i tried putting on XP, it went through the setup, i put in alll the coreect serial numbers and shit. Then it rebooted like it said it was going to then it said it couldnt detect it. I didnt have my other hardrive hooked up only the new one.

Hmmm.....this is pissing me off lol i dont know how to create a partition table....i shoulda just got the packy at teh computer store to do it for me....too late now i guess.

No, read what I wrote, you Right Click on 'My Computer'.

And why does it need to be formatted if its brand new.

Because it could be used in a Windows PC/Linux/Unix/Mac etc. and they all like different file systems.

You shouldn't be installing XP on 2 drives on the same machine unless you REALLY know what you're doing.

So let me get this right: u took out your old HDD which had your Windows on it and put in a new one with nothing on it and you're surprised it doesn't boot?

You can find me in The KOSs2 (TK2) discord while I'm playing. Feel free to come and say hi! TK2 discord

No, it goes through some options, like setup and shit. You know, to put XP on it. Then after i put into the serial in it, load to XP and what not, nothing. It dies on me.
To clear this up, i have the boot floppy and boot disk.

Make sure the jumper settings are corret and that BIOS (F2 or DEL at startup) can detect the drive. If not then set the jumper settings to something reasonable like Cable Select (CS) or Master.

ffs didnt you read what i posted? you dont just have to format it you need to create a partition, without a partition windows doesn't even think there is a hdd there.

it doesn't matter if it brand new, it leterally has nothing on it, it needs a partition table for windows to detect it.

that was the fist thing i though of but fdisk only supports fat32 and fat16 meaning th biggest partition he could have would be 32Gb or 4Gb depending on fat16 or 32.

Yeah, true. He could just use the one built into the XP installer.
