The game itself may be the same, but it's more enjoyable when it counts for something. This is true even if you aren't gunning for the cup and the prizes (my clan isn't, because none of us really play all that much, yet we still much prefer to play a clanwar over a funwar)
Look how many people have complained about the lack of a Renegade single-player ladder, either here, on the XWIS forums or in various community sites. How many of those players are actually going to push themselves 24/7 for the Supreme Commander? I doubt it's many of them, but they still want a ladder so their games actually count statistically.
The other thing is the Clanwars.cc league has in-game rules which are actually enforced by someone (stuff like base to base, backwalking the ob, etc... and obviously cheating). It can be annoying as hell when people do that to you, and thus it's nice to know you can play in a league where you're "protected" if that's the right word, from it.
Speaking for myself, if it wasn't for the CW league I'd almost certainly have quit Renegade a long time ago (probably when cheating was at its most rampant), and I know A LOT of players who are of the same mind.

You should elaborate on that. So it's useless to do a game of soccer if you don't play in a club/division?

Useless is the wrong word. It's like... how can I put this. Me going to a nightclub and staying sober. I'll still have fun, but I'll enjoy it more if I get a few drinks in me when I'm there. The nightclub is a clanwar, the drinks are the league...

like the league or not, the best clans and best players use it - if you want to get better you need to play those people and if you want to do that you need to be on the league in most cases.

Everyone has their own preferences on how they want to play this game.
Clanwars are the main way to improve at this game nowadays, the better players just don't play public much anymore as they are banned off most servers.
In fact, i'd rather play clanwars as there is far less chance of having a load of muppets on your team.
