Ok looks like I'm getting the same issue as everyone else, when I launch renegade with renguard installed i get the error
"renegae has encountered a problem and needs to close".

I uninstalled and reinstalled renguard, didnt work.

I uninstalled renegade & renguard and reinstalled and it didnt work

I formatted my HDD and reinstalled win XP Home (32 not 64). Still the same, yes I have all the latest microsof updates, but are you sure thats the problem.

Now see those microshit patched are there for a reason, hasnt anyone figured out what the issue is and got a work around for it.

I can play renegade launching from gamespy without rengaurd but I can only play on the UNRules servers, and they are always both laggy, and then you get the millions of popups to download rengaurd.

I tried the manual install to and the core patch one manual install, still the same.

Please help you guys gotta get this working, whats the point of buying the game if you cant play it? (oh and mine is the original not the TFD version).

Then, M$ makes it so that updates beyond that point require authorization.

I would've turned off Automatic Updates from the start, but XP has this nice little habit where it sits there and whines every five minutes about how "Your system may be at risk!" or something. 'course, if your system isn't "genuine," they could give a flying shit...which suits me just fine, really. I'd rather they not care at all than care too much.

I'm pretty sure a 2nd hand Windows 98 wouldn't cost 300 $ if you really want a Windows...

98? I'd rather have NT 4.

I really wish I hadn't said that now.

Anyway, once I used Windows XP, it would be exceedingly hard to go back to something like Windows 98 Second Edition. Windows XP is just too damned awesome in comparison. XD So yeah. I suffer for my personal tastes. Mad

Windows 98SE was a pretty stable release. Much better than it's follow-up Windows ME...

Windows XP ain't stable itself, it's just better at reacting on all its crashing. It is indd handy that it doesn't need to restart everytime it crashes...

Open start menu, click Run

Type in services.msc

Find Security Center and right click, select properties.

Set it to startup: Disabled and stop the service.

And that's the end of the annoying popups. Security Center service's only function is to provide annoying popups about out of date virus definitions, and your system may be at risk crap.

NOTE that this does not disable automatic updates, just the popups that go with them. I am not sure if the 'you need to restart your computer because it has been updated' crap is disabled or not by doing this, but I havn't seen it since I disabled it a while back...

Now that's convenient! I'll have to write that one down when I finally get around to reinstalling with a different("authentic") CD-Key... Thanks, danpaul!

yeah its all well and good blaming micro$h1t and believe me I am trained in their $h1tty products and I wont be defendign them. But the thing is I has the genuine software installed and running before as well as the lastest updates an it worked perfectly with Renguard. Now that I've had to reinstall everything (yeah Im a smuck that forked out $200 for XP, though you can get an OEM version with SP2 for $50 from Newegg.com) from scratch it dont bloody work. But if it is indeed microsofts fault then you would think that the makers of Renguard would send the software to microsoft for compativilty testing and they would then be told what that issue is, or Oh i dont know, make a new version of Rengaued on a machine that has all the latest microsoft updates on it!

and that just proves you have no idea how hard it is to make software that is compatable with a patch that microsoft hadnt even thought of at the time renguard was released.... Sarcasm

sheesh, talk about expecting miracles... and as for making a new version, they are busy doing so, but software is not created overnight! Sure, they could probably release it now, and I suspect it would work for 90% of people, but they are probably waiting until they can make it work for at least 99% of people, so they dont get idiots coming on the forums saying 'omfg your software is crap it doesnt work' etc etc.

sorry for the ranting, I just get so fed up of people moaning and whining about renguard, when they contribute nothing towards it....

people should get to moan about renguard, see if you buy a game and it multiplayable out of the box thats the bloody way it should stay, but thats the way it is. Nearly all servers require you use rengaurd, if you manage to get on a server and it only
"suggests" you download it then you get flodded with popups to down loan it, normally at critical times so you end up beign killed or not getting that C4 on the terminal just in time.

Or if you're a bloody good player and have MVP x8 like I do quite reguarly you get booted "because he must be cheating, he aint running renguard and must be cheating to get that many MVP".

Life would be easier if we didnt have to use it.

There is nothing on the Renegade box thats says
"unless you have Renguard you life playing the game will be hell or impossible".

If the new version is 90% compatible maybe those whom wanted to can beta test it, I'd rather hopefully play 90% of the time with no trouble than 90% of the time getting pissed off!

Yes I do know how long it takes, but I also know how long Ive been having trouble with Rengaurd and it started before the windows update, and its been a very long time. No it aint me or my machine, and no I aint the only one.

Live would be easier if there were no cheats, then Renguard wouldn't be needed. Don't blame servers for wanting a bit of a decent non-cheating game, blame the cheaters who oblige you to use Renguard to proove you ain't cheating.
