I received this error message during the Core Patch 2 installation:
"Old file not found. However a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match. Note the error you are getting as well as what file is being patched and contact Blackhand Studios at Blackhand-Studios.org for assistance."
The file was shown as "Now patching Data\Always2.dat"
Can anyone help me get through this problem and get Core Patch 2 to fully install?

Do you have Core Patch 1 installed?
Did the patcher download patchall.zip or cp2.zip?

yea..same thing happened for me and i hav no-idea at all how to fix it and install cp2,
EDIT: oh yea, i have Core Patch 1 installed and the downlaoder is downloading patchall.zip

I believe that I installed Core Patch 1 some time ago when Core Patch 1 was offered as I was signing on to a Renegade game from GameSpy. Yesterday when I selected a game from GameSpy, I was taken instead to a screen which offered Core Patch 2. I don't know whether the patcher downloaded patchall.zip or cp2.zip.
After I encountered the installation problem, I chose to ignore the Core Patch 2 update when I later selected another open game to play. Do I need to download the patchall.zip and/or the CP2.zip file to complete the upgrade to Core Patch 2?

Tonight I ran the standalone CP1.exe file and at the end of the installation, the last line in the DOS box was Error 17. The installation progress bar indicated 100% and Renegade seems to be working. Should I try to run CP2.exe now, or is there something I need to correct to resolve Error 17 first?

It should be safe to download Core Patch 2 (only over RenGuard though)

My cp2 installation keeps re-installing itself, it worked fine the first time, no errors at the end, however I didn't start renegade, so I don't know if it properly installed. The next time I started Renguard,it proceeded to download cp2 again, it reaches patchall.zip, then the downloader freezes and appears with this message
"Old file not found. However a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match. Note the error you are getting as well as what file is being patched and contact Blackhand Studios at Blackhand-Studios.org for assistance."
Then another box appears saying "Core Patch Download Complete" and after clicking "Ok" the box closes, along with the installer.
EDIT: I just noticed Patchall.zip was in my Renegade directory, probably from my first install. I've just extracted it into my Renegade directory, and am about to atempt the installation again.
EDIT: It got onto canyon, about to delete all basic maps and retry.
