I know this topic is more than a week old, but I'm interested. havvok, did you do anything? You should definitely tell the police because your friend will shit himself;
I agree with sir phoenixx, and this kind of thing has happened to me too. What happened was a friend from school (not really a friend -- I only knew him from school. He's an alright guy, but the kind of guy that sees an opportunity and takes it) sent me that old sub-7 trojan through MSN. The sub7 trojan is basically a backdoor to your system, and gives whoever infects your computer total control over it as long as you're online. He just fucked about with my computer for a while but didn't do anything serious. I thought it was funny too, but eventually a joke is a joke, and he could have done anything up to erase everything on my HD. I told him to remove it, and I don't think he did, so I told him I'd phone the police. He got scared (he told me in school the next day) and removed it. For all I know though, he could have kept it, but it won't be on my PC now as I got a new hard drive and OS a while ago.
Case in point: when the police is involved, people will think twice before breaking the law (which your friend was doing, no matter what he says).
