The simple question I ask here is, is there anyone that doesnt think we should fix all possible bugs with the standard westwood maps (as in, fix anything where its clear that you werent supposed to be able to go there, drive there or shoot through there)[ 37 votes ]
1. fix the westwood map bugs 34 / 92%
2. dont fix the westwood map bugs 3 / 8%

Various bugs exist in the standard westwood maps and buildings, including but not limited to:
the abillity to shoot through the top of the mountain on Field
the abillity to shoot the Nod base from behind the GDI barracks with a MRLS on Islands
the abillity to shoot through the glass in the weapons factory
the abillity to drive vechicles inside some buildings
the abillity to get on top of the GDI weapons factory and GDI barracks on Canyon.
the abillity to shoot through the glass in the tunnels on Islands
the abillity to drive vechicles onto the walls in Mesa, Walls and Walls Flying

The map designers did not intend for these things to happen, therefore they are clearly bugs.

Some people like some of these bugs (for example, some people like being able to get on the walls in Mesa or the barracks in Canyon). But that doesnt change the fact that they are bugs and that you shouldnt be able to get vehicles on the walls in Mesa or Walls and that you shouldnt be able to get on top of the barracks in Canyon or whatever else.

oh and BTW, if you think that some or all of the bugs should not be fixed, specify which map bug(s) you dont think should be fixed and why you dont think they should be fixed.

Do you consider driving into the ledges at the sides of the cavern in Mesa as map bugs?

There's a hole in the sky through which things can fly.

If you consider the ability to get on top of the GDI weapons factory on Canyon a glitch, then so is the tunnel nuke of the Nod airstrip. Or the Ref jump on every map. Or any place you can wall hop on every map. On Canyon, you can jump off the bridge, over the barbed-wire, into the front barracks too. You're going to have to disable that move as well. Where does it end?

Its a simple matter if physics. You put a bridge that close to a ledge, how can you not realize that people can jump that far? Leave Canyon alone.

Its clear from the map design and such where the westwood mappers intended you to go on Canyon and where they didnt.

So, I suggest we fix it so that you cant go to the places the mapper didnt indend you to go.

I'd say logical things like jumping from the bridge over the wire should be left alone, unless they weren't intended. Fix everything that wasn't intended, if that means we lose a few tactics then so be it.

the abillity to shoot through the top of the mountain on Field
This impacts play negatively for one side, fix it.

the abillity to shoot the Nod base from behind the GDI barracks with a MRLS on Islands
This impacts play negatively for one side, fix it.

the abillity to shoot through the glass in the weapons factory
This impacts play negatively for one side, fix it.

the abillity to drive vechicles inside some buildings
Doesn't really hurt either side, and considering it rarely happens I don't care either way.

the abillity to get on top of the GDI weapons factory and GDI barracks on Canyon.
GDI can nuke under or over the Strip and can pointwhore from way outside the Nod base with tanks, so this balances out in the long run I think. Leave it.

the abillity to shoot through the glass in the tunnels on Islands
If you fix the WF bug, you should fix this too.

the abillity to drive vechicles onto the walls in Mesa, Walls and Walls Flying
Both sides can do it, and on walls it doesn't really provide much advantage nor is the B2B there worth the effort it takes. Leave it, it's fun to shoot people off the walls. Mesa has generally become accepted strategy and is not difficult to defend against, I would say leave it as it adds some strategy to a map that is otherwise fairly boring and straightforward.

It would be nicer if jumping would be enhanced. Jumping on ref, on walls and erverywhere where it might be possible to jump on (litte walls, ref ledges ....)
would bring a lot of addition fun to renegade.

And then, if we changed the name to n00begade, wouldn't that be cool too? And then we could have giant pink elephant blimp with heat seeking ferrets. Yeah, that would be cool too....

The only one I am really adamant about is getting on top of the Barracks on canyon. The WF unfortunately has a VIS glitch whenever you jump onto that spot, so it makes it glaringly obvious that it wasn't intended. But of course, the roof of the barracks is a much better position for defense than that particular spot on the WF.

Disarming the beacon from that spot on the WF is very easy, too. It's the beacons that are planted on the ramps beside the WF that I most often see get missed.

So, fix the WF bug on canyon or not--it doesn't really bother me. I could never really get up there anyway unless I'm in LAN mode.

Surely the designer cannot think through every possible thing that could ever happen on the map they design, so as long as these "bugs" don't negatively impact a side I don't see why they need to be squashed--especially such an innocent thing as getting on the roof of the Barracks on canyon, which is actually something that benefits GDI and doesn't disadvantage Nod so greatly.

And edit: by "getting onto the walls on mesa," I suppose you mean jumping the barriers inbetween the opposing refineries with vehicles?

To me, there are few bugs that can't be easily defended against. I would say fix the really bad b2b ones like Islands, the WF glass.

All the wall jumping ones are very easy to defend against. You just have to know that they exsist, which many ppl do, so I don't see them as a problem, plus, they are fun to do.

I need clarification in this thread though.. are these things you're planning on doing in an FDS update, a scripts update etc? or will they be part of the "BHS_mapname. mix" files that crimson has talked about?

There are some of those fixes that I definately do not agree with, and if we were "forced" to deal with them in the official maps, I would also like to see some "other" changes made also. i.e. jumping on both platforms by Nods airstrip on Canyon, damage cauing nukes under the airstrip tunnel, beacon damage from tunnel beacons on field, driving vehicles up the outside ramp holes in Mesa, etc..

You can't fix that damage because that was designed, it's an area of effect weapon. It was officially supported by WS in both Canyon and Field and never has been considered a bug.

The ramp holes aren't bugs either, if a vehicle isn't meant to go into a cave, passageway, or something like that, they actually did block it off.

right, well.. that sort of answered my question, I guess.. "are we fixing things that most people want, or things that aircraftkiller tells us are the right things to fix"

Most servers don't allow tunnel beacons.. so regardless of what you think "WS" wanted... no one wants the damage to happen.. okay with you?

How does "most servers" equate to "no one," that contradicts what you just said. If you look at the past, and remember certain events, you would notice that there was no official condemnation of the beacon weapons. They are both area of effect. Devinoch said, quite often, that it was built into Field. It takes teamwork to plant, and teamwork to defend. Furthermore, you need like three of them to really do anything remarkable.

Canyon is full of bugs, but the Airstrip-under-passageway-beacon is not an exploit of any kind. The weapon can reach it, it can damage it... That's why it is an orbiting satellite ion cannon, and a nuclear weapon. Even if the damage radius on both is ridiculously small, it's still designed into the game level.

I advise BHS on what should be fixed and we are basically going to fix everything that is a bug in the game, or at least that's the impression given. If it wasn't a bug, but most people say not to do it, it won't get fixed. Just enforce it on your server like you always have.
