U.S. Navy Capt. Ouimette is the XO of NAS, Pensacola. Here is a copy of the speech he gave earlier this month. A wonderful and accurate account of why we are in trouble today.

America WAKE UP!
That's what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 and maybe it was, but I think it should have been "Get Out of Bed!" In fact, I think the alarm clock has been buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.
It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran. This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency. The attack on this sovereign US embassy set the stage for the events to follow for the next 23 years.
America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Viet Nam experience and had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then, President Carter, had to do something. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert. The ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America's inability to deal with terrorism. America's military had been decimated and downsized / right sized since the end of the Viet Nam war. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was doomed from the start.
Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnaped and killed throughout the Middle East. America could do little to protect her citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued. In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut. When it explodes, it kills 63 people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once more. Then just six short months later a large truck heavily laden down with over 2500 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut. 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more. Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait, and America continues her slumber. The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gates of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.
Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe. In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid. Then in August a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rhein-Main, 22 are killed and the Snooze Alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US soil is continually attacked. Fifty-nine days later a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro is hijacked and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the passenger list and executed. The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of 1986 that killed 4 and the most tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, killing 259. America wants to treat these terrorist acts as crimes; in fact we are still trying to bring these people to trial. These are acts of war…the Wake Up alarm is louder and louder.
The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America. In January 1993, two CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The following month, February 1993, a group of terrorists are arrested after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City. Six people are killed and over 1000 are injured. Still this is a crime and not an act of war? The Snooze alarm is depressed again.
Then in November 1995 a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia killing seven service men and women. A few months later in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35 yards from the US military compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It destroys the Khobar Towers, a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over 500.
The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America does not respond decisively. They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. These attacks were planned with precision, they kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and goes back to sleep.
The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12 October 2000, when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded killing 17 US Navy Sailors. Attacking a US War Ship is an act of war, but we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.
And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans think this was the first attack against US soil or in America. How wrong they are. America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.
In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high official in government over what they knew and what they didn't know. But if you've read the papers and paid a little attention I think you can see exactly what they knew. You don't have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since 1979. The President is right on when he says we are engaged in a war. I think we have been in a war for the past 23 years and it will continue until we as a people decide enough is enough.
America has to "Get out of Bed" and act decisively now. America has changed forever. We have to be ready to pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues. We cannot afford to hit the Snooze Button again and roll over and go back to sleep. We have to make the terrorists know that in the words of Admiral Yamamoto after the attack on Pearl Harbor "that all they have done is to awaken a sleeping giant."

I had a former manager of mine at Radioshack whose daughter was in the US Navy. In fact, she was stationed aboard the USS Cole. She had in fact just finished eating, had put her tray up, and got 5 feet away from the mess hall door when she was thrown up against the ceiling in a terriost act. I remeber coming into to work that day, not knowing anything about it and seeing my manager on the floor crying his eyes out when he finally heard from his daughter nearly 8 hours after the explosion.
I met up with again again yesterday, and when the subject of the war came up, he simply said that he hopes they all (terriosts) die.
This speech is a really good point. How many more families and victims must suffer before we finally do anything about it. Hopefully, no more. It is time that we acted intead of react. It's time that our soldiers face their enemies head on, rather than sit around and wait for them to sneak up. It's time to not only destroy terrorists organizations, but also the countries that hide and support them.
I know the main reason for terrorism is in protest to US policies and troops in the middle east, but honestly, if these people could govern themselves without killing each other, then we wouldn't be over there. Personally, two years ago, I was of the opinion that we should just pull all our troops and assets out of the middle east and let them wipe each other out. Of course, thats not possible, because for all the countries that scream against the US being in the middle east, there would be an equal number just as angry for the US pulling out of the middle east, and would try and blow us up anyways.

In the middle east and other countries there are dictaters,
Dictaters whom hate their poeple and the poeple hate them.
These dictaters are supported by US.
even US had a hand in putting them in power.
Example.
Countries in the middle east.
Egypt
Saudi arabia
and others.
Some in South America.
some dictaters receive AID packages other receive military packages in return for securing US interests more then their own countries interests.
Many people around the world hold the US responsible for their poverty and there incompetent governments.
These countries would rather push American interests first then the interest of well being of their populations.
US after WW2 took huge interest in the middle east due to it's vast oil reserves. thats when it started
Secondly. the bombs which the isrealis use to kill, murder palistinians, these same bombs have a SIGN saying MADE IN USA.
Another reason people get angry at US. because America is supplying bombs to isreal free of charge.
These bombs are used to murder civilians
From 70's era we noticed attacks against US worldwide by inviduals
these poeples are showing their greviences of US foreign policy.
It's affecting them, it's affecting their familys, it's affecting their wellbeing of their country.
Have you noticed that these attacks never occur to countries such as Belguim, Austria holland germany and other naithins which hold the same ideals such as freedoms and democracy as the US.
This proves freedom and demcracy has nothing to do with these attacks.
Attacks only ocurrs to the US because of their foreign policy.
If united States stops meddling and interfering with other countries then these attacts will never would of ocurred.
Top officals even the inteligent officails of the US are are saying the attacts against iraq will cause more attacks against the US.
some have even resigned.

those countries in the middle east ASKED for our help. practically begged the united states to come in and save them from whatever big bad neighbor was threatining to blow them up that paticular week. As far as Isrealies go, I assume you mean their constant invasions of the west bank and the gaza strip. If terrorists would stop blowing crap up, the isreali army wouldn't have to go and mow down a city block every 2 weeks.

The above arcticle talks about US getting attacked agross the globe.
That has nothing to do with WW3.
US has attacked and a nation unilatrely, without any backing from US or it's close allies. And while doing so bellitle it's allies arogantly.
UN failed to do anything about it, this as a result made
France, germany russia and chine as well as some other nations
come closer as a result of US action.
Europe is divided.
Recently france, belgium and germany annouced a closer mililtary. they have for the fist time singled out United kindom.
This military pact which will include russia and to an extend china.
Countrys will RE-ARM to counter the huge US military. As of now any international body, treaty is viod.
No country is safe .
Before countries were safe due to international organisations and treatys .
There was peace in europe for 50 years after WW2 due to international organisations like UN.
WW3 will be near.
lots of wars after this will occur if the US continues it's unilateral policy.
If the poeple of the US standby and let the mad man Bush and his cronies continue the world would far less safer.
for the first time Germany in 50 years never had the nerve to standup against US policy. it has never ever done that prior to WW2.
Germany, france and russia see this US policy directly in conflict with their own National policy.

No one in them countries ever asked for US help.
US only helps itself.
The understand their problem is with their incompetent
governments which are backed by the US.
They are called Cleint/puppet states.
The people want to overtrhow them but they get locked up tortured and even killed.
There are many prisons in Egypt and saudi which do this.
Do ever see on TV in the past poeple protesting burning American flags
in the middle east. Here they are saying Amercian government stop meddling in our country, stop supporting Isreal.

Iraq has on the whole cooperated rather well so far with UNMOVIC in this field. The most important point to make is that access has been provided to all sites we have wanted to inspect and with one exception it has been prompt. We have further had great help in building up the infrastructure of our office in Baghdad and the field office in Mosul. Arrangements and services for our plane and our helicopters have been good. The environment has been workable.

Makes it much less of a *shock* that they didn't discover much when out 'inspecting'. There is a very important aspect of inspections...the element of SURPRISE.

Terrorism can never be eradicated by military action (alone). It's roots lie in poverty, bad education and such.

So we should give Iraq our income tax earnings, send them to school, and team them morals like "don't blow up other countries shit, don't torture and rape your women, etc" ?

The Middle East needs better income equality, and oil revenues need to be used to build school, educate the people and setting up healthcare systems, so the economy can develop.
