Ok, I finally bit the bullet and built my new system.
Here's the specs:

Antec Performance PLUSVIEW 1000AMG LE Case
Antec "TRUE380" Power Supply
Intel D875PBZLK Motherboard
Intel P4/ 3.0C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512KB L2, HT
Kingston Dual Channel Kit 1G(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
WD Raptor 36.7GB 10,000RPM SATA-150 Hard Drive
Asus 16X DVD-ROM Drive
Win XP Pro
(Various other parts ie. round cables, LED fans, etc.)

For now I'm still using my old video (GF4 Ti4200 64mb AGP) and sound (SB Live 5.1) cards, but even with those this thing rocks! I used to be able to get a drink, fix a sandwich, walk the dog, wax the truck, etc... while waiting for Renegade to load, but now if I blink, I miss it. Sweeet!
Anyway, with my old system I used Norton Internet Security & Antivirus and it worked pretty well but it seemed to conflict with some other programs (AutoCad for one) and I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with Norton Software. My brother-in-law suggested staying away from anything Norton and using Blackice and McAfee, neither of which I'm too familiar with (but are readily available to me). Any advice here on any of these programs would be appreciated. Thanks.

Norton does not cover a whole host of things that other companies do...when I swapped to McAfee from Norton, I found that McAfee picked up immediately on about 15 infected files that Norton had never noticed- this is with fully up-to-date Norton and virgin install McAfee. That's how bad Norton is.

Krazyfoxx, what in the name of badgers do your computer specifications have to do with Norton software?

Mcafee works great. I've never had any trouble with it.

I have never had Norton conflict with any of my programs before, but I had only installed NAV on my computer for a short period of time.

But the reason I did not like having Norton products on my system was because they seemed to bog everything down. Thats probably just me though. Anyway, because of this I went out and tried Blackice and McAfee.

McAfee Firewall: Did the job, but had very few options that you could change. Hardly customizable.

Blackice: Looks like crap when you install it, and does not look anywhere near as flashy as it's website. However, it does the job, and gives you basic firewall protection.

I reccomend you take a look at ZoneAlarm. It provides a good firewall service, and it very customizable. Although I have heard from people that ZA used up a little more RAM than most firewalls, its worth a peek,

And don't bother upgrading to "pro" versions of any of these. They all display a lot of harmless stuff to make you think you need their pro version.

It was the same on my pc, that norton slowers the system-speed.On the other hand i think it works well. After i changed to mcAffee, i cannot say it works better against viruses, but its more friendly to my slow xp 1600 system...

Nothing really, just thought I'd use this thread to bragg Razz a little rather than create a new one just for that Wink Thanks for all the replys!

I've never had a problem with Norton, apart from that 1 time where it wouldn't let me on hence not letting ANY programs access the internet.. nothing a Safe Mode and a little Folder Deleteing didn't fix Wink

The only issue I've ever had with Norton was it's reaction to a W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen bot. It went into it's usual chaos mode and wouldn't close the window informing me that I have a virus, but can't remove it.

Funny, I had the same thing reversed; when I had a virus McAfee didn't get it, but Norton did Smile

Expensive comp. I use Norton with no problems at all, but Zone Alarm blows, unless you have Pro. Black ICE is a good firewall as well.

Goodbye and thanks for all the games Westwood!
