Anyone explain what the differences are with a 'General solution' and a 'Particular solution' to a mathematical problem?? Confused

I've just had advanced mathematics and was slightly confused by these statments.

Cheers

I'm way rusty on this stuff but I think a Particular solution is basically just something that makes the equation true, like y=4x. It applies to only the particular conditions you set. A General solution is is the set of all the particular solutions, and usually specifies a constant value (it's not applying any one particular solution).

So the general would be like deriving from first principles??? Question

A General would be like x=4y+C. You are specifying a constant. Thats all I remember lol.

Shouldn't a general solution contain variables? Since it's general, meaning broad, encompassing alot, the variables can stand for any number...

And particular solutions contain only numbers as answers? Since particular means certain, an individual thing, a certain number, etc.
