Hey hey. I have a few questions that I would like answered. Right now I have Comcast High Speed Internet. Its a pretty good cable internet, but I have it running to only one computer.(Straight from cable to modem to computer) I wanted to buy a new computer and have it on both. I dont know how. (Comcast don't seem to want to tell me how to either without charging me 200 bucks!) I wasnt sure if I wanted to get a labtop with wireless or just another desktop computer. But here goes my questions.

How does wireless work? Would I buy a wireless router and hook it up to where my cables coming from, then get some kind of card to plug into my computers so it sends it? Would I need to contact Comcast if I did this or no?
How do routers work. If I buy a desktop computer and want it upstairs (this one is downstairs with the cable running to it) How would I work that out? Once again would I need to contact Comcast if I did this?

Sorry if this is off topic, but I would really like to know and you are all a great bunch of people! Thanks in advance! Smile

You wouldn't need to contact them to set up a basic LAN (Local Area Network).

You'll need a network card for each PC you'll want to connect to the network (LAN) which you'll hook up to the router.

I guess Comcast are putting that price up for people who don't want to/can't setup a LAN themselves. Don't worry about it, the instruction manual that comes with the router will guide you through it.

I think you can get some router packs that have network cards sold with them, if not don't worry, you can grab network cards for about 10 quid each, well atleast in England.

I don't know too much about wireless im afraid since I just use ordinary LAN.

I think it's cable-type RJ-45 you'll need to connect the cards to the router (unless of course, you're going wireless), unless i'm mistaken.

What kind of option should I go with on this one!

Wireless LAN options available 802.11b or 54g

I can get a free 54g upgrade....whats the difference? And are both compatible with Comcast? DAh!

LOL i am just ur man on this one. I got comcast cable on my bran new comp downstairs and i have comcast on this one which is upstairs in my room here is what u need to do. go to a shop that sells comps i got mine at circet city. buy a Microsoft Cable Router and a Microcsft wireless receiver it is a little box with an antenna. It is about 100 dollers total i think but with rebates ended up only like 30. to hook it up you un connect ur cable modem u have now from the cpu and connect it to the router then connect the router to the cpu now the router cable modem and cpu should all be connected together. It comes with a cd to install very simple only took me 5 min to do. now go to the computer you want to send your signal too and plug in the receiver to a usb port and install the disk that came with the reciver on that comp. now you just set up your network pass and name and then the receiver will connect and it will have a little icon in the task bar that says if your connected and if its poor good very good or excellent signal. Not that hard you dont have to pay another 60 doller bill. If you want to do it with a lab top buy a card instead of the receiver (should be right by the reciever) and plug it into your labtop as the instructions that come with it say and i assume it too comes with a disk and ur all set. GOOD LUCK MAN

P.S no you dont have to contact comcast. P.S just wonderen will urs let you have more than 4 people with out dropping them. myn drops everyone if i host over 4 and i have a bran new REALLY GOOD COMP and i dont know y lol.

They probably mean if you had 9 people on your LAN all using the internet at the same time, the internet would be slow (depends on the speed of your line).

But "hosted" sounds like they thought you are going to set up a web host service or something.

A lot of tech support people I've spoken to over the past years aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

You can get some expensive network cards, but it's a waste of money. Go for the cheapest ones you can find.

The guy said I would need to buy a wireless router and two wireless cards. One for my labtop and one for my desktop....I was told I wouldnt need a wireless card for my desktop.....that I could just hook the router up to the comp?
