Hey!
I used to play Renegade very actively years ago. I think it was in either 2005 or 2006 when I first started. For roughly the last year, I haven't played much, if at all. I never announced it or "left", but it just happened, and I stopped coming here. As I went through installed Windows 7 Betas, RCs, and eventually, the final, I somewhere along the line didn't even install Renegade anymore.
Last night, I installed it, patched it, added the scripts, added RenGuard, and copied my old skins over, and jumped online. It was either n00bstories or Jelly I joined (pretty sure it was n00bstories), and played about two games. It was alot of fun. It didn't have the magic to drag me back in full time, sadly, but after that, I can say I'll still be playing occasionally and not let it sit and/or uninstall it.
Most may not know or remember me. My in game nick is "H3llian07". I am not a "pro" player, but I am a good one, and at times, a very good one. I "originated" mostly at/from Black-Cell, and when it went inactive and died, I mostly went to Jelly Server before my inactivity set in. I was never in the "in" or "popular" circle in either community (especially the latter since it was bigger and I was there less), but rather sat quietly in the back. When Black-Cell had their clan war against Jelly, I joined in favor of Black-Cell, and didn't use TS or often personally speak with the main Black-Cell group, not during the clan war, nor eve previously, but I always looked at the Black-Cell crew as my family, and I showed it by fighting for them and being one of the top performers for them in that second clan war (albeit we lost), even though I played more at Jelly at the time. I miss Black-Cell (any of you still here and remember this quiet resident of your old server?), and I also miss the magic Renegade used to have, but even in it's current state, it's something no other game is/has, so I'll relish it and play this game while it still lasts (and going on the new official catch phrase above, it could be a long time!). You'll likely see me mostly at n00bstories and Jelly.

I used to play in the black-cell server too, and was a massive fan of theirs. I remember you from that server, I used the handle ren00b, or reb00b or something to that effect.
I too miss the days when BC flourished. I suppose they was a victim of their own good deeds, and was finally fucked by the a00 non-sense. I see it as a great injustice to them tbh.

Yep, I'm open to playing at any servers besides the two I mentioned if there are enough players (don't like huge games, but don't like four players either). Exodus fill the bill at the time, and I've played there a few times before from what I recall.
I'm itching to play a game or two now, but my main PC is disassembled and in parts since I'm spending a day or two giving it a perhaps unneeded but regular cleaning, and the PC I'm on in the meantime (a Pentium III 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 4 Ti4200) doesn't run it very fast online. Renegade just has this absolute fun factor to it. No matter the circumstance, you can always have fun playing Renegade for at least one match.

Yeah, was hoping I'd get infected with the magic to want to come back to it full time though. Still as much fun when I do fire it up though.

Same here, except I have a 2.2 GHz pentium 3 and 512MB ram with a GeForce 4 Ti4600, it's not that bad unless you're sniping.

A question regarding RenGuard. Because it's a client/server application, what will stop the legions of people who cheat, and can crack apps, from reverse engineering it down to it's core protocol / encryption (which I'll assume it has), and duplicating it, so that they have their own client which responds to the server with all the correct info for an unpatched Renegade, but in fact is patched.
Personally, I think you should write a server-side only anti-cheat, which hooks the networking routines in Renegade. From there, using either the help of your staff who worked on creating Renegade, or from knowledge aquired while working with the network code in Renegade, create a system to monitor hit locations (did they REALLY hit, based on calculations by the anti-cheat (stopping BH)), how much damage are they claiming, vs how much damage their currently selected weapon really does, etc.
Then, add rate-of-fire checking, complete w/ lag tolerance (since lagged client will of course, upon delag, seem to fire faster, etc), and option to simply "edit" the incoming packets, to filter out the cheat (reduce damage, stop bullets, etc), or kick-ban the cheater (admins decision, based on anti cheat config).
Is it just me, or does that make more sense?
The flaw to Renegade of course, which is the core to the cheats, is that unlike most other games, Renegade lets the CLIENT decide hit locations, damage, RoF, etc. Vs others which say, "ok, the client fired their pistol along this trajectory. Did they hit something? How much damage did they do to that target if so. Report findings to clients".
My only concern, is that there will be alot more teams of people ripping apart the hard work of your small team, and undoing what you have done. Can you keep up writing fixes / completely rewriting the protocol to counter them once they have created their OWN complete anti-RenGuard client? If not, consider the server-side only method, and solve it once and for all, with the only version changes being to fix bugs, and not complete rewrites which will really piss admins off (if it takes this long for the initial, how long after the cheaters create their own client to counter it will your rewrite take to do?).

ill say this again to all the TT people actually working on the patch. all you have to do is fix the bugs in the game. This is your role. dont get involved in a pointfix debate that you can never win (spoony has never managed to win one and hes a decent player) nor bother suggesting solutions for the faults in pointfix. just fix the damn bugs and you will all be remmebered as renegade heroes.

Are you sure that's not a Pentium 4? The Pentium III only commonly went up to 1GHz, or 1.4GHz if you had a rarer Taulatin. Even overclocked, there's no way a Pentium III would run at 2.2GHz for long (unless you meant to type 1.2GHz?).

Some how I doubt that IronWarrior likes Crimson, but n00bstories is still a decent server, lots of teamplay, pretty full daily. There's always Jelly, atomix, n00bless to play on as well I suppose.
