How does one go about fixing this?

Have you seen the various fixes that others have found? Enabling Universal Plug 'n Play (UPnP) on your gateway, or maybe this?

I got this same problem, I posted it elsewhere and there has been success.

Restarted my PC, loaded Renguard BEFORE my IRC and then loaded IRC after Renguard. If I closed Renguard at any time it would not load again, or give me the connection problem when loading IRC before Renguard.

I don't run IRC while playing, and I've already tried the UPnP fix to no avail, and the solution you linked is not available on my gateway Sad
