Concerning Renegade is like 8 years old I think the game is doing great!!
There are still full servers every day. AOW is the most populair like always, there are decent snipe servers where still alot of people play in. The only sad thing is that the clanwars aren't as much played as before.
Also communitys and modders are getting the best out of Renegade. There is now a team called Tiberian Technologies working on the newest patch for Reneagde. They are fixing every bug known of occuring in Renegade, also the graphics are being upgraded, and new features such as a Automapdownloader which will be very usefull if you want to play new maps.
A cool feature which was released last year is the GPS radar, the renegade hud suddenly became very important and everyone wanted to have it. Now that there are still features being added, such as building bars, minelimit, mapoverviews it gets more and more interesting.
As I see it right now Renegade will stay with us for more years, at least I can't get enough of it.. its like a drug 
I only have my thoughts how people react when Renegade-X comes out. Ofcourse its cool to have such mod for a much better engine then Renegade, but if to much people move from Renegade to Renegade-X Renegade will really die.. I'm affraid when I play Renegade-x I will miss the real feeling of Renegade, hopefully I'm wrong

Looks like they've reached 1000+ members

The current player-to-server ratio is kinda sad, meaning a lot of empty servers. A handful of servers are always active though and like previously mentioned, it's been 8 years so all things considered, I think we're doing alright.
Right now the game is plagued with cheaters and the same repetitive maps over and over again, but the efforts of the community have been working hard to solve this problem; Previously with RenGuard, currently with BIATCH or Renegade Resurrection, and in the future the Tiberian Technologies Patch.
With that said, it's the modding community that's keeping this game alive. There's many talented modders, for lack of a better word, that release new and intriguing things to the community that keep the experience fresh and entertaining for the rest of us.

That's just my take on the current situation.
I've never been good with estimates, but I think Renegade can make it a few more years

mods (standalone) are doing quite fine:
C&C Battle For Dune
APB (released)
Reborn (infantry only release, full release to come)
Red Alert 2: Apocalypse Rising
Then there is also:
SCUD storm (alpha released) (generals)
Tiberian Redux (C&C3)
both of these mods are going slow
well renegade-X is there to, if you see it as a renegade mod or something
also, there are some more mods which just started out:
ren40k (warhammer 40k universe)
renegade: scored earth (WII)
alright, all of these are standalone games, so not really mods
also, I think there is more out there, so anyone can fill me in on this...
Moding can be real Fun...

I think these mods killed Renegade. When you look on WOL you will see old classic starting from Jelly servers and ending in n00bstories.
Others modded servers (Im not gonna name it) totally destroyed main point of game which was originally released by Westwood Studios.
That's my point of view.

. But I get your point. Each their way of playing renegade, though.
It really owns despite its age and im sure that it will keep it up. As for me i will surely continue playin it. In my view its one of the best old-school games that have no match even now.
