Hi folks!

I downloaded and installed the Renegade FDS from here: http://ren.game-maps.net/index.php?action=file&id=520

I did not make any changes to the server.ini, except for setting the GameType to LAN, so that I can play with some other people on the network. So it is a fresh and clean installation.

The server starts up just fine. There are no error messages, the MAP loads and so on.

My problem is that the server does not show up in the list of LAN games in the Renegade Multiplayer mode.

There are no firewalls between the hosts. They can definitely reach each other. Also when I start a Mutliplayer game the standard way (using the Multiplayer/LAN mode in Renegade), everyone else on the network can see it.

I tried to figure out what happens on the network, when I use FDS compared to the Multiplayer mode of Renegade (using wireshark). And I noticed one significant difference: the FDS broadcasts its existence on port 3373, whereas a normal Mutliplayer game in Renegade is broadcasted on port 3366.

My question to you is: how can I make the FDS use port 3366 instead of 3373? I already set every port-related option in the server.ini to 3366 - without success.

Also, please let me know, if I missed to configure something, which should be done for LAN games.

Thanks in advance,
quirks

P.S. The reason why I want to use FDS instead of Renegade Multiplayer/LAN is because I want to be able to play in co-op mode with my friends - in case anyone wonders.

Oh, and I forgot to say: yes, I already did a search on the forums for this kind of problem. And I even found one here: http://www.renegadeforums.com/index.php?t=msg&goto=213167&rid=24262#msg_ 213167
But the guys did not come to a solution (they didn't even know the cause (which probably is the different in the ports of FDS and Renegade Multiplayer mode)).

Had a similar issue, you have to do +connect ip:port in the shortcut, plus some other things which I don't have on hand right now. (+netplayername ?)

Wow, thank you for the quick reply!

When I google for the hints you gave me, most pages tell me to use a command similar to this:

C:\<wherever I installed Renegade>\Renegade.exe /multi +connect <IP of my FDS>:<port of my FDS (4848)> +netplayername "quirks"

But that does not seem to work. The game starts as if there were no extra parameters. Am I passing the parameters to the right executable? Or should I pass them to the server (I tried that, too, but in vain)?

Help is VERY appreciated. I have wanted to play this game with by friends ever since I got it.

Why don't you just go the LAN game listings and click 'Host Game'? For a small number of players over the LAN it should work fine, no need to use the FDS at all...

EDIT: Just re-read your post, I assume it's because you can't activate a co-op mode using client side hosting? I have never played co-op, so I don't know exactly how it works.

Have you tried simply hosting a passworded WOL game using the FDS and doing it that way? You will still get a connection as if it were a LAN game, since the packets (should) be routed directly through the LAN.

Is there any way, I can play in co-op mode, when I use the built-in Host Game function? Because the reason why I'm going through this pain Smile is that I want to have all my friends in my team and bots in the other team.

EDIT: sorry, I didn't read your EDIT while I was posting a reply. I will try your suggestion with the WOL FDS instantly. Thanks again.

Ok, I just tried to setup a WOL server. It seemed to work, but whenever I start my Renegade client to logon to it, the server restarts (the moment, I request the list of servers). This is a problem, since I do not have the resources to run a dedicated machine for the FDS. I need to be able to run the FDS and Renegade on the same host.

You have to give the server a different username on WOL than the one you use. The reason it reboots is because it loses connection to WOL when you login.

Thank you for that hint. By logging in with a different user, the server is not kicked out anymore! I can finally try to get co-op mode running.

Ok, I finally got co-op mode to work. So thanks A MILLION to you guys for your valuable help.

However, the co-op mod that I use (CO-OP Beta 2.50) is a great disappointment:
- Levels sometimes end before they even get started.
- In some missions I am placed into the GDI base as Nod, giving me effectively 30 seconds to live.
- In the skirmish, I cannot buy the best soldiers (the ones that cost 1000 credits) and on the Nod side I cannot by anything.
- Enemies respawn all the time in the middle of the map. So when I have already fought my way through half the map and I die, I have to do it all over again.

Thumbs down for this mod.

I will have a look at Renegade Resurrection next.

The mod works fantastically, you have it installed wrong.

What is there to install? You extract the archive, adjust some settings in the server.ini and svrcfg_cnc.ini and you're done.
