Ok I'm trying to compress a 650MB file(about that) and when I try to compress it it only cuts a few MBs off that is there any way to make it small enough to email(or upload somewhere) and not take a day to upload Angry Question

Compressing will give very good results for some files (usually exe, ...) and very bad for others (like jpeg). If you're trying to compress mp3's, then forget it as mp3 is already a compressed format Wink.

What I'm trying to compress is an ISO.

ISO files generally don't compress very well unfortunatly.

Stop using gayware and start using the 1337 methods!

Jpegs are already compressed too.

I hope you are kidding. ISO is 1 of the easiest formats to compress into a smaller file(s). A 650mb iso huh? Several ways of doing it. This method is not very effective but:

1)open the .iso with winrar, extract the contents of it into a folder, then repack it as a .rar

2)or my personal favorite, use winrar to slit up the archive into xmb peices, creating many, smaller sized files.

It still all depends on why you need to compress it, for transfer, use the split rar archive method, if you are trying to just save space so you can store it, then you are out of luck.

TBH most of the ISO's I would want to compress already contain compressed data, hence they don't compress very well. It really depends on the content of the disk image.

And just splitting it up into lots of smaller files does not exactly help him to upload it, as he still has to upload ALL of those smaller files.

Oh, I forgot to add something in, once it is in .rar format, you don't need to make it into an .iso again. Simply rename it to .rar->.iso and it works most of the time. However, like DP said, if the image file already contained compress data (.cabs for games, etc), then it might fuck up the file, but not permemently.

The splitting up the files idea works to a certain extend though it runs into a problem when I find out one of the files is about 493MB Rocked Over

Compression is done by cutting down on repeated data mostly.

i.e. for an image it's much better to say "this is a line of black pixels" rather than "this is a black pixel, this is a black pixel, this is a black pixel, etc. etc. etc."

If there is little repeated data (or it's already been compressed) then compression will not get you much results.

So what you're saying is a whole image of black pixels that is originally 1MB will become 0.1KB after compression? Razz

Depends on the format used... if saved it as something like GIF or PNG it probably would Razz

Advanced compression in winrar. You can put a .rar file into a .rar file and it will compress slightly, but the more compressed, the longer it takes to decrompess.

Also, I doubt 650MB would compress to less than 12-15MB for email, maybe it will go down to 200-300 MB, but not small enough for email.

That's about as much as you can get it.

ISO's are images of disks, and to get it like that most of the data is already compressed. You can't compress something that's already compressed so you're pretty much out of luck.

My suggestion is using PowerISO to compress to .daa, which is essentially an iso whose files are all "optimized" (compressed). I've seen 650MB files go down to 580MB, in some cases lower.

Of course, you have to pay [Listen] for PowerISO (for anything >300MB), but it's so worth it just for the compression.
