I want to become a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer.
I've been learning C++ from books for a little while now and I like the OOP style. I would prefer a job programming in C++ but in the UK most city jobs want C# coders for trading platforms.

I hate my job, I hate the people I work with, and I hate the management. Hate is a really strong word but it's true. I hate them all.

I want to get out of this shitty job that i've been in for years now. I'm 25 years old and if I don't make a move now then I feel that i'm gonna be stuck here forever, when ideally i'd like to bomb the place and leave right now.

I enjoy the simple things I have done in C++ and I know I would love a job like this. Even if it has to be in C# and .NET.

I want to enroll on a home learning course to get my accreditation. I have looked at this package here:
http://www.icslearn.co.uk/it-technical-courses/it-certification/mcsd-microsoft-n et-certification/
And it looks pretty good to me. But beofre I take the plunge, can anyone else recomend a better trainer, or perhaps a cheaper one?
Maybe you tried this market yourself and have some words of caution?

Please give your input as I am serious about this and don't want to make a mistake here.

I'd recommend that anyone learn something that they enjoy doing.

Getting certified by MSFT is not an easy task, you better make sure you're ready.

That's why I was going to do the training for it. I have no real previous experiance with C# and was hoping to learn it as part of the training. Is this not wise? What do you recomend?

Go for it, there is nothing as bad as being stuck doing some gay ass job every day.

If you have connections through your current job I would recommend doing a bit of job hunting.

I can't speak for the UK, but over here employers seem to fall into two categories.

1. Degrees and certifications are everything
2. Degrees and certifications are just about nothing

I was talking with my future boss today and he said (direct quote) "Anyone can get a degree, I have one". I've just finished a 4 year degree and that's how much he values them.

TBH a lot of employers over here are interested in things like your work ethic, willingness to learn, previous experience etc. a lot more than a peice of paper. You may find it's unnecessary to get the job you want if you show you're competent.

I got a job over summer with the same company on the strength of: "My mate works here, and I know some php, but I'm willing to learn and I don't mind working". I ended up working there for 3 months then returning to do my last year of Uni.

Basically, find a job you know you'd be good at if you learnd a bit more, show basic competence in the area and a willingness to learn and see how it goes.

Well, out here a degree is like a key to open the door. If you keep the job is determined by all the things light wrote down. But u need the degree to get in Wink.

Sorry Reborn, I had a family emergency so I couldn't reply, but anyway.. MSFT certification is everything really. If you do get certified by MSFT to program in whatever language (be it VB.NET, C#, etcetera) or whatever, you will have a lot of job opportunities at MSFT and other people will want your skills ASAP. I would just highly recommend that you are sure you have a lot of experience (maybe several years?) before you even enter the training. Though, I can't really speak on behalf of the training because I don't know how hard it is, or what they cover. However, just make sure either way that you are a well rounded developer before entering this whole shabang. Desktop applications, networking & communication, databases & data management, GDI & GDI+, smart client development, et cetera. The list goes on, and of course you can't know everything, but its important you know a huge chunk before hand. I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide to do, A+ & MSFT certification is the only thing I have hope for myself.

Are you sure you are not me? I am going through the exact same thing right now. I'm also 25. My boss is about to retire and if I don't get her job I'm going to be stuck doing this shit stain of a job for a very very long time. If I don't get it then it's time for me to move on.
