I'm seriously considering getting a laptop for college - but I don't know which! I'm stuck between the base MacBook and the base Latitude D630 upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 9-cell battery. I want portability and battery life.

The MacBook is more portable but has less battery life, whilst the Latitude has longer battery life but less portability.

Which would you choose?

MacBook, hands down. The g00ns here are probably going to be all "omg Apple sux" but I have had a MacBook Pro since March of last year and I love it. I used BootCamp and installed WinXP on it and I use both OSes when I need their strong points.

I'm the bawss.

I've always liked my Dell laptop. Inspiron 1100. It's not top of the line and it's like 3 years old now, but it's always gotten the job done and is still going strong. Almost no problems.

If Dell's laptops are still anything like the one I have, I'd have no regrets buying another or recommending one to somebody. I've never had a mac though so I don't have anything from that side.

I currently own a Dell Inspiron 9200. I've been very happy with it, with one notable issue- the monitor started going screwy last winter, and I had to replace it at cost because I couldn't part with it long enough to send it to the shop. Though this comp has served and continues to serve me well, but when it dies I intend to replace it with a MacBook. With Vista becoming standard on everything now (with only a handful of even Dell computers offered without, none of them systems I'd buy), I can't see myself ever buying a prebuilt PC again- laptop or desktop. Both my roommate and his girlfriend replaced their computers with MacBooks this past school year, and from what I've seen they're very capable and nearly indestructible. Since they now run Intel chipsets, you can dual boot Windows if you so choose- which is exactly what I'll do with my copy of XP when the time comes.

My recommendation is to get the MacBook. It is more expensive, yes, but it is the more well built and more capable machine and will very likely last you quite a bit longer.

If I were getting a Windows laptop, I'd probably buy a Dell. I had one for a job a few years back and it was awesome. But, my current job is for an all-Mac company so, since I am not one who plays "trendy" and is willing to give anything a chance, I tried out OSX and I really liked it. Since I am a web developer, and a lot of web programmers are also starting the embrace Macs, there are a lot of really cool apps out there for us.

I think you'll be happy that you went for the Mac. I'm actually really surprised that there wasn't any violent opposition to it in this thread since I posted. Razz

I personally dont like apple computers or mac's, I personally use all windows based PC's, I'd say apple is high quality, but they are very very pricy, looking in the ads, they always show a windows PC right by a apple PC and the specs of the windows PC are higher and the price is cheaper, for the mac, your buying for style and operating system, for a windows PC, your buying for the cpu and graphics power and the os, I'd say if you want a mac, go for it, but if your leaning on a windows laptop, DOTN GO FOR DELL!1!!!

My past with dell was say "dell hell"

Go for HP or compaq.

^^ ignore the moron above me.

I am actually typing on my HP right now and it owns. Why are we comparing macfaggotry with dellfaggotry, start thinking about what is good for you. If you don't do anything requiring an idiot proof mac, get a HP, Toshiba, Gateway, or Sony. Buying a mac is stupid for most people because it isn'g budget friendly and 90% of people will never use the full potential of a mac. Bottom line, don't become a trendfag buy what is good for you.

Either one would be good for me. I'm just after basic word processing and the likes while I'm taking the bus or are at other places that's not home. And probably the Mac would be best because of its size and I'll get to know a new OS - not to mention lots of people have been saying it's a great one. But more battery life is a good argument, even if that laptop is heavier and bigger.

I didn't even know Macs are becoming trendy.

Mac also runs BSD which is vastly similar to Linux under the hood so you're almost getting two OSes in one.

Viruses for Macs are not common, rarely seen, but don't go off saying they don't exist or don't get them, because thats quite the false statement.

Of the 3 HP laptops Ive owned, all have had hard disk failures, so if you end up with a HP, just make sure you backup your data.

I must admit I do run some crazy applications on my laptops... installing Oracle database probably wasnt the best move in terms of giving my HD a break Wink

Hey Demin! My HP caused me nothing but problems. Not only was the battery that came with it a lemon, but the power supply in the back failed once, I sent it in for RMA, and then it failed again. Now my warranty is up and it's sitting and collecting dust atm. Going to have to fix that paperweight someday I suppose...

My fiancee on the otherhand got a Dell. The HDD failed in 5 days, and had to be replaced 3 times since then. Also, the screen turns completely red if tilted one way, and completely green if tilted another...
