I think im going to just ask for one for my birthday and hope. And there may be tracking devices in our schools computers. They might be built into the bios to recognize when it isnt at a familiar router, and send a snapshot and IP of the thief to the owner. I think that is the reason the computer guy at school let it slide. He's jsut going to wait it out.

Just leave it in a class room, or say you found it laying out side somewhere.

But to keep it when you know it is the schools would still be considered stealing.

If it had been me I still would have returned it myself, but at least you still made a good decision. If you listened to Ryan3k I wouldn't know what else to think. I don't get how you could stand having nothing good in your heart at all.

In theory everyone here has taken part in a crime even though it had nothing to do with them because this kid told us his mate stole a laptop. Even though no names were discussed, he still told us that a crime had been committed. Doesn't that make everyone here who gave advice on what to do accessorys? Persoanlly i think it does and i think it will have an affect on the whole community if the police find out.

OMG!!!

Let us all start reporting everyone for theft.

I brought a pen home from work that I used last night. Now to give Merov his dues, I have commited "Corporate theft". Now who wants to report me?

Who has taken an envelope from work, used the company phone, taken a stamp, submitted incorrect expenses....? Its all theft, especially when you add up the total cost. A single pen costing 10p x 1000 pens going missing in a year is £100, now add up all the rest of the items that we borrow and how much does a major company lose per annum?

Theft is theft, a 10p pen or a £1000 laptop, no difference is there? Blush

Um, ive gotten so much of my shit stolen so I would not return it. Eye for an eye.

Anyway, its quite easy to chnage the mac adress, update the BIOS (which would erase the old one), reinstall windows, and maybe just open the back and look for a tracer bug. Also, look on the outside, if it has a sticker or serial number, you mmight want to file it off if you think they could actually physically find it Big Grin

Im sure a lot of people that are saying to keep it would be too scared to do so in real life, but can tell someone to do it on the internet.

There is a lower limit to the value of stolen goods that can be prosecuted; IIRC that value is $20. Stealing a pen makes you an ass, but it doesn't make you a criminal- a laptop is quite a different story.

Shoplifting isn't dependent on the value of goods taken. If you take something from a store, you've shoplifted.

It doesn't matter what you steal, its still stealing no matter how much its worth. We just have an easier time telling out conscious to stfu when its not worth as much.

I agree.

I'd sell it on ebay.

You people who told him to keep it are simply unbelievable!

No wonder our countries are going down the crapper, with a bunch of immoral morons like you "people" growing up in them.

Absolutely without question that laptop should have been returned immediately! I don't care if it is beat up, re-formatted or downright broken, its not yours, you didn't pay for it, so you have absolutely no justification to keep it.

To those morons talking "eye for an eye" crap, you are seriously the worst of all. Just becuase someone stole your 5 dollars, or you 100 dollar phone, that does NOT justify you stealing other people's stuff, not in the slightest bit. If anything, it should make you realize just how stupid theft is in the first place having first hand experience of just how angry it makes you! Why would you possibly think that just becuase someone did it to you, you should do it to someone else?! That is totally NOT fixing the problem, but making it worse!

Simply unbelieveable! You all should be totally ashamed of yourselves!

Well said, though it could have been much shorter. I would have gone with the elegant, "You're all fucking idiots. Grow up already." Smile

I don't really think you're in any position to demand things from people like that.

You're the one who asked what he should do about the laptop. You're the one who was actually thinking about taking it, pawning it, and then using the money from it.
