You'd fly off into space, there's no doubt about it.

I think you're all missing the fact that spinning objects create their own gravitational pull depending on how fast they're spinning. If the world stoped spinning everything would be in the air since there'd be no more gravity holding them down. You wouldn't come back to earth since there's nothing pulling you back (unless you tie yourself into an anchor in the ground which then the other planets gravitational pull would still keep you airborne).

If you need reasurance on this theory think about the National Space Station. To keep its gravity it needs to be spinning, when it stops you just float around. The reason you float around is because the earth is still spinning and retaining its gravitatial pull (which the distance between the NSS and Earth is greater than any other planet) and the Space Station is revolving around it.

This is what i think would happen anyway. Seems logical too.

This is nonsense, show me one single link saying the earth's gravitational pull is because of its rotation - gravity is caused by the mass of any object, something as large as the earth creates a lot of gravity but huge war ships moored close to each other will actually pull towards each other (helped of course by the reduced friction caused by the water)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity

Gravitation is a phenomenon through which all objects attract each other. Modern physics describes gravitation using the general theory of relativity, but the much simpler Newton's law of universal gravitation provides an excellent approximation in many cases.

I'm just wondering whether the magnetic field flipover will happen sometime soon, e.g. within my lifetime.

I can't remember the estimated time it takes but it's comparativley imminent - that would be an interesting phenomenen to witness, I don't think too much will happen though I think the animals the use magnetic forces will be able to adjust easily and it's not hard to flip the letters around on your compass to make that work.

Well MexPirate, you beat me to it. I was about to say that gravity is most definately not caused by a spinning of an object.

In fact, spinning creates centripital force, a force that throws you away from the object. Ever been on one of those rides where you stand against the wall and start spinning and the floor drops out? The reason those rides work are because the centripital force, created by the spinning of the ride, holds you against the wall.

As for the magnetic force thingy, see NOVA. Call me a nerd, but I generally find these shows to be quite interesting, and when I have the time, will sit down to watch a few, particularly about space or technology.

EDIT: For those who don't know how to navigate, see Reversals.

You are correct sir, assuming you were close enough to a pig at time of stoppage. Don't forget, everything will be flying at 1000 mph, so it's not like a pig will fly rite by you, unless you somehow stopped and survived long enough to see a pig go by.

I really don't think that the human body could survive the sheer force of being flung so hard, so I don't know if you would be able to see anything.

What if I'm flying a plane @ 1000 mph, I'm not connected to the Earth so would I live long enough to see my Pig Fly? Razz

That's an interesting question, one I am not 100% certain of the answer. I think you would have a much better chance of surviving, you'd probly have to fight major turbulence of the air suddenly jumping to 1000 mph, and after some time you would also have to dodge all the other objects that are flying out and up, but yea you just might live long enough.

Wouldn't the plane simply be ripped apart from going so fast?

I wouldn't be "flung." You would just keep moving at the same speed you are not, while the earth did not. I believe it would look more like the earth was moving instead of yourself at first.

RenX is right. There will be no force that would "fling" you forward. You would continue the motion while the earth stops.

No. Modern day fighters are more than capable of going 1000+ miles per.

It's more of a theoretical question I guess, much like my 1000 mph car in the dark tunnel...
