I don't get a watermark on fraps videos... but yes the 30fps limit is annoying, although any more and it would slow renegade to a crawl...

The Fraps unregistered version doesn't have the FPS limit anymore. You can only record for 30 seconds max with a watermark at the top though.

Ooh, nasty.

Even with the full version of Fraps you can't really record faster than 30 FPS unless your computer is god-like.

Older Fraps

-Free
-No time limit
-No watermark

-No sound
-Older version

You don't really want to record with sound on in the newer Fraps versions, anyway (you echo in TS/Vent when you are recording if you have sound on).

Use FRAPS, the 30fps limit is not a problem since your system will only be at about 27fps from the recording process anyways. Certain people may be able to, uh, loan you their registered copy if the watermark really bothers you-- but then again, the watermark helps save people the trouble of asking how to record and is not that obtrusive as it's only at the top.

Also the fact it stops every 30 seconds is not too bad either; doubletap your record key (F9 for me) and there's no noticeable gap when you combine the videos in Windows Movie Maker, which you'll probably want to use to compress things anyways once you're done.

I just wish Renegade used the same method of recording as Source. You can achieve any FPS you want at any resolution (even 16:9) when you use the built-in recorder in the Source engine. And guess what, it doesn't even affect your FPS. That's because it records to a .dem file with just information so that you can play the demo back in the game. How it works is that you can run the demo and start recording at any FPS you want, and then just go eat something and it should be done when you get back. then you will find all the frames as TGA files in the main directory of the game. Then you import the frames and the sound file in VirtualDub and save as an AVI from there.

I have a copy of fraps 210, records sound and has no watermark, not the newest version, but it has the advantage of being... modified.. to unlock everything. Records up to 30fps

You guys were discussing the ingame lag, well there are a few ways around this. If you have fraps running in saving the clip to seperate hard drive partition then the one the game is being played on it'll run much more smoothly. This can be achived with a program called Partition Magic. It has a wizard tha'll walk you right through the process. I suggest using game cam, it worked better for me than fraps did. You can also set the priority for Renegade and your video taking program to high, to dedicate some moure resources to the two programs. this is dont by pressing Crtl+Alt+Del, going over to processes, find renegade and the video taking program, right click, set priority, then click high. Also youc an try going to start, control panel, performance and matinence, system, advanced, the settings button in the performance section, the advanced tab, and then set the radio button to background services, this will help the video taking program work better. Just a few tid-bits, if you have any questions just ask.

Making it write to a separate partition would make no difference. That is a complete myth. The hard drive can't magically run twice as fast.

I don't know if you're actually saying the truth or not, but if this is true, where is it?

Fraps likes to run on hard drives that are high-rpm (7200 minimum preferred) and that are not fragmented. One of the employees I contacted for tech support once said that Fraps has a hard time searching for space when your drive is nearly full and highly fragmented, so the extra dedicated partition just helps increase available space and decreases fragmentation. Taking videos at half-size helps a bit as well.

that's why you defragment it.
