n00bstories.com Under Attack
posted on: [Saturday - Apr 26, 2003 @ 4:51 PM EST] by: AircraftKiller

Just wanted to let everyone know what's going on with the N00bstories site.

First off, due to a packet flood, the site and its entire hosting domain are down. That means Protonic.com is down, and hundreds of other sites are down. Apparently, someone finds it funny to packet flood websites like that.

Second, the main network for C&C chatting is also under attack, by the same individual. RadiantX, found by irc.radiantx.net, has a good number of its servers down and unable to operate. If you cannot connect to the #planetcnc chat or the #n00bstories chat, then that's the reason why.

Hopefully this will end soon. With N00bstories.com being down, that also means that the Official Renegade Forums are down as well. Mad

thats on CnC den

hopefully its all back 2 normal soon

She saved the database(mysql?) to a file on her computer (most likely with phpmyadmin), and uploaded it to this database, and installed the forums here.

Hey, how many MBs was the database?

Hey Crimson, what type of fire wall are you useing? DOS attacks are kinda out, and easily stopped as far as I remember from my netwoking class. Im glad they are back up.. did you happen to get the IP of the ones who are doing this? Any IP number can be traced... just my point of view, sorry it had to come to this and moving all of it, its kinda lame.. and people always try to ruin peoples hard work.. =(

It wasn't her computer that was attacked, it was the server that was hosting these forums that got attacked.

What type of firewall is used for the server..is what I meant. You can also do what we did during class, and limit the amount of download from e-mail or packages comin in.. saved me in a network work

No firewall can stop this sort of attack. The incoming packets overwhelmed the server. Imagine putting a bowling ball underwater, then put the straw on the bowling ball and try to get water through the straw. You can't get much, if any. There are various ways to stop this sort of attack, but Sprint in this case null-routed the IP for n00bstories so my web host could be back online.

Any clue as to when the attack might get stopped? or n00bstories.com being brought back?

As far as I've been told by those close to the attackers, the attack stopped... right now I am waiting for Sprint (who provides a backbone to my web host) to re-route my IP back to my site.
