Biking/walking is not an option when you have to go decent distances several times a day. I am not going to bike to class, and then figure out a way to get to work via bike because I know that I sure as hell am not going to bike down the shoulder of the freeway, and that certainly wouldn't happen in a timely fashion even if I was to do so. It's just not practical, or else I would do it.

There's no way my fat ass can just "ride a bike" anywhere in my city. It's so spread out that we don't even have a decent mass transit system to cover it.

However, I am telecommuting full time now so I hardly drive at all. Oh, and gas prices were like 1.75 when I bought my minivan.

I'm the bawss.

Newsflash for the economically-challenged: gas prices kept artifically low by government regulations to prevent "price gouging" creates gas shortages. The fluctuation in prices is caused by an imbalance between supply and demand. Due to strict government regulations (such as the nearly impossibile standards oil companies must meet to build another domestic refinery (there hasn't been one build on U.S. soil for thirty years)) forced through by anti-capitalist environmentalists as well as the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the supply of gas has become extremely constricted while the demand of gas has dramatically increased.

Since when did this thread turn into an "OMG ENGLAND > AMERICA I WIN" fest? Seriously guys, you have better things to do than comparing countries. I find it completely stupid, there is no point in doing it.

I want to know how far some of you people need to go... I used to ride my bicycle in Los Angeles 15 miles each way to work. Driving a car on the 405 is simply retarded. I bet those fools use twice the gas every day sitting and going nowhere idle in a $50k SUV.

I spent about 40-50 minutes on the bike each way... I passed probably about 150-250 cars a day sitting at lights on Sepulveda Blvd. while riding home. I laughed the whole way every night too. Suckers.

Not everyone has their work place 15 miles away. My dad has to go to the other side of Macon to get to work, and sometimes he has to drive farther. My Uncles both have to drive from Gray down here to Macon. My Mother has to go to Warner Robins to get to her "job."(She doesnt have a job, shes just a Tournament Organizer for some games.)

I've seen it as high as $1.40 CAD per litre. That translates roughly into $4.46 USD per gallon.

I'd say you Yanks have it easy. I'd hate to be a commuter in Europe right now.
