its a compressed file, just like a .zip

you need WinRar to un rar it, http://www.rarsoft.com/download.htm

just download and install.

i preffer .rar to .zip because it compress's smaller and you can also do file splitting

Don't put the .rar file in your renegade directory. .rar is a kind of zip, you take it, and unzip the contents to your data folder.

You can also do file splitting with Winzip + .zip's
