How do you host your own website without paying? I mean, how the heck do you HOST it from your home computer without uploading all the stuff to a webhost provider? Without paying?

DJM

No he couldn't mooch off you Jake,

Invivo host is gone and it aint coming back any time soon, our website is gone, along with any unsaved work and the forum posts. It's all been deleted...

You don't pay attention, do you, Dave? Invivo went belly up, but about 3 hours before that happened, I did a full backup. Forums will be looking the same in a matter of an hour. Wink

Well, get Abyss Web Server. Providing you have a fair upload speed, you can host it from your computer, and all you need to do is save the files to the HTDOCS directory in the Abyss Web Server folder, and they appear on your site! You need a domain name or a subdomain though, I reccomend http://freedns.afraid.org for that.

Abyss Web Server: http://www.aprelium.com
Free DNS: http://freedns.afraid.org

You need to connect to your site using your IP address otherwise.

Maybe I can help you set it up, but the Aprelium community is nice too Smile

Yeah, that it does. It's a bit hard, but Aprelium will help you with it Smile

If you want, search for the topic "website" or "help" with my name as the author, I'm sure there'll be a numerous amount of topics about my website everywhere, or general website help. Wink

Just wanted to add for the person that is going to try to host from his own computer that he should:
1. have a kick-ass upload
2. have no monthly limit
3. leave the computer on 24/7 and best use the BB-line only for this...

That's not the point. You're nowhere in the community itself. You only have 13 posts, and we've been up for how long?

Hell, if you get REAL desperate, create a Geocities page. www.geocities.com
Name ideas: RunNGun (A picture of a person running around shooting at enemies. A pile of bodies would be a nice touch.) FragPile (I would suggest a picture of Frag grenades in Halo for this site's main page.) and Sniper'sPost (Any Sniper in any game that can be recognised as so. Halo is a good one.)

Those aren't really good names for a game site... :S

They don't really help in describing the content you bring.

Geocities really sucks. I found that Freewebs was better, even with the low amount of anything.

So what if they dont describe anything? Say you like to snipe alot - SnipersPost. This means you can tell people more about sniping if you wish to do so. If you like to basically Kamikaze, then choose RunNGun. You can tell people all about being a Kamikaze person in the group, and the best weapons to use. FragPile is obvious. "Frag Out!" comes to mind when i think of this phrase. If you want to just a strictly gaming site, no real curve to anything, then just have it, like; GameHunter or something. Geocities is bad, but its completely free up to a limit, and its pretty easy to make a site from scratch. I should know, ive made myself a site that actually works! In every page theres a certain picture you can click on to go back to the index page. Ive got one thats a picture of a giant D20 rolling over someone. When you keep your mouse over it for a second, it states something like this: "You have just been killed by the worlds largest D20. Click here to go back to the Index page, and try again." Truthfully, if i ever made a gaming site, it wouldnt really be like, say, www.cncden.com where you get to download things. It more so be a Forum, with special sections for Snipers, Grenadiers, Shotgunners, Pistoleers and whatnot. I would try to stay on the Grenadier/Sniping areas, so as not to give people poor advice in the Shotgunner and such areas. Im the worst Shotgunner you can find, usually. Ill have a look at FreeWebs, and see what i think of it compared to Geocities.

This is why you don't make a website. *rolls eyes*

Firstly, gaming website need to do something that sets them apart from the other little gaming communities.

Secondly... wtf?! An area for each class? "I was in this one game where we, like, totally wasted the other team! It was, like, so cool, because, like, they didn't understand how we, like..."

Lastly, CNCden has a very successful forum, because they deliver content everyone likes. http://forums.cncden.com/

Geocities. Sucks. End. They can't host a gaming site, unless the gaming site has no downloads. Even then images can take up a lot of space after a while.

Cheers.
