Just a reminder not to believe everything you hear from the media (or the military). Wink

Ex-Marine Says Public Version of Saddam Capture Fiction

United Press International

A former U.S. Marine who participated in capturing ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the public version of his capture was fabricated.

Ex-Sgt. Nadim Abou Rabeh, of Lebanese descent, was quoted in the Saudi daily al-Medina Wednesday as saying Saddam was actually captured Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, and not the day after, as announced by the U.S. Army.

"I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced," Abou Rabeh said.

"We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed," he said.

He said Saddam himself fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then they shouted at him in Arabic: "You have to surrender. ... There is no point in resisting."

"Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam's capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well," Abou Rabeh said.

Abou Rabeh was interviewed in Lebanon.

powerful stuff, but is it true? and if so whats the point of changing only the trivial parts of the story?

Isn't the point more "Why would they need to lie about how he was captured in the first place."

Shame though, those iconic words of "President Bush sends his regards" didn't happen, apparently.

The burden of proof is on him. And I do not see enough of it to be deemed a truth.

Perhaps he doesn't like the US and wants to tarnish the US's reputation? I don't know. Perhaps it's true, perhaps it isn't.

Yeah I heard about this too. I was going to post this exact same thing, but I decided not too because it didn't seem 100% reputable. I couldn't find it anywhere else, but I guess that's censorship for you.

As far as I know, Iraq was never invaded.

I feel really pissed off that they have to lie to us like this. Actually no - i'm not pissed off at that. I'm pissed off that they lie to us when they don't have to lie.

I think this is BS and here is why. There is no reason to lie at all, so why would they? Just so that they could say they found him cowaring in fear instead of firing at troops? whats the difference if we got him? But again, there is not enough of an explaination in this article to come to any form of a clear conclusion on this subject.

I wouldn't put it past american troops to lie about how he was caught....hell, I wouldn't put anything past the american government.

But, had I been an iraqi soldier on saddam's side and knew that he had not been captured in a hole, I'd be pretty damn pissed at america and would feel right in the mood to drop some bombs on it.

Have you been in a hole the last two years? I mean, pickup a newspaper from about a year ago, and they didn't talk about much else...

And I distinctly remember that Javaxcx (For it is he) lead the arguments that Iraq was indeed invaded - violation of sovereign rights, yada yada yada, so...

Yeah.

Thats my point though... I only knew Iraq was invaded through TV, newspapers, radio, etc. If it turns out that the story about Saddam and the Spider hole was falsified, I wonder what else was.

Saddam was captured by Task force 121, no Marines are in Task force 121.

http://students.engr.scu.edu/~jabraham/specwar/specops/us/tf121/page1.html

When Saddam was captured no major Marine units were in Iraq. the left in September of 03 , and did not come back until January of 04.

I tried searching the Marine Locater, which has been has been a requirement to sign up for a while now, he is not there.

I searched the Marines Uniform tool board looking up who was approved for a Combat Action ribbon( he would have gotten if he was shot at) He is not there either.

I also looked up who was killed around that time.

http://icasualties.org/oif/BY_DOD.aspx

No Marines and no one of Sudanese decent killed around that time.

Got some of this info from other sources, but I confirmed it.

If only the media would do some detective work before posting stories. If I ever control a major media market, sources will be given for corraborating evidence at the end or in little notes at the bottom of the screen.

But I never will. So we're stuck with bullshit.

Yeah I wasn't sure about this. The article was short, had no date, no author, and I couldn't find it elsewhere when I tried.

But it still goes to show how influential the media is.

Seeing as there appears to be more than one story about how he was captured, can we be certain he was? After all there could have been more than one lookalike, and I've heard there was a few..

No flashy signature..
