Is there a tool for renaming w3d-files (and the meshes inside them)?

If you want the name to be the same length, you could use a HEX editor I guess Thumbs Up

hex editor to change the name of the meshes and rename the w3d file.

or

w3dren by jonwill to rename the w3d file and optionally the texture names.

you could probably edit the source to rename meshes. I would just use a hex editor.

after using w3dren the file was completly brooken and apeared in piece parts at the airstrip Sad

so renaming every meshname in a hex will be a solution? will try...

but why the tool damaged the file? in LE the model seems to be fine...

use a hex editor like this one http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm

if the w3d file is named myw3d.w3d and you want to name it Sweet.w3d.

Just do use the find tool and replace all instances of myw3d with Sweet.
